Cheap Red Dot Test - Impressed me enough to try one

Re: Cheap Red Dot Test - Impressed me enough to try one
The Field Sport red dot arrived, so I thought I'd do a quick update. The UTG mount hasn't arrived yet. First and most importantly the sight specifications have are different than what was originally shown in the videos. The model nomenclature changed to reflect the major change. It is now the D007RG. It has both a red and green dot. It also has only 5 illumination settings though the paperwork still reflects red only mode with 12 brightness settings and a 4 MOA dot, though the website lists it as a 2 MOA dot. It now has 5 brightness settings for both colors. I checked the sight outside this morning in the bright overcast conditions and all 5 levels are visible. The green seems to be easier to see at #1 than the red. It uses a 3v CR2032 lithium disk battery , which, is supplied and says it's good for 2000hrs continuous use. I doubt that is true, but we shall see. It looks well made, no obvious cosmetic issues; all aluminum construction. Paperwork says it's waterproof to 10M for 30min. Temperature range -20F to +140F and shock resistance "3x 500G 0.7-1.1ms. I have no idea what all that means. The mount has one cross screw which is certainly adequate for a low recoil application but I'd rather see two. The dot adjustment cover caps don't appear to have "o" rings, so I'm not sure if the adjustment screws, which require a small bladed screwdriver, are sealed. I would assume they are to ensure water resistance. The battery cap which is on the selector dial is sealed with an "o" ring. There are limited instructions on the paper work which is typical of the stuff made in China, but it does cover battery installation. The battery cap itself has no polarity markings. The selector switch (dial) will make a continuous revolution for color and illumination selection and instructions say turn it clockwise. The settings are "R" 1-5 and "G" 1-5 with either alpha setting being "off". I'll have more when I get the mount to put it on my M&P 15-22 to try it out.

My experience with inexpensive optics is that you get what you pay for.
I have throw away several. Most have fallen apart or lost zero repeatedly. On my 15-22!
The Bushnell TR-25 being the exception to the rule. I currently have the lucid HD-7 on it now and it holds up well.
However it has a flaw, and that is when you rotate the knob to get the different reticle, you can move it without getting it in the same detent (locked in place) and it will change your POI. Not good.
Puma, would love to hear your followup after several range trips.

Just for grins I ordered last week and it came in on Friday. I stuck it on my AR and away to the range we went. Not bad. It held up through 500 rounds of .556 and held center once i got it there

So you spent over $100 in ammo to play with(test) a $23 scope. Sounds like it was just an excuse for a range trip.RPBrown wrote:Just for grins I ordered last week and it came in on Friday. Thanks, but his didn't have a fixed iron sight on the front. Will this still clear the sight?puma guy wrote:The mount in the video is this one.TreyHouston wrote:So i am about to order one for my M&P 15 sport II, it has a fixed front sight. What size UTG mount do i need? 3/4 or 1in?

Re: Cheap Red Dot Test - Impressed me enough to try one
A friend who had ordered one of the red dots and I were comparing our sights and realized he had ordered the original red only model D007R on Amazon. His has 11 brightness settings plus off and is red only. A very interesting thing occurred when I looked for the Field Sport D007R on Amazon. The D007RG was the one that showed up and is the one I ordered. Only after I looked around a while ago did I find the originally reviewed Field Sport D007R available for $19.97. BTW My instruction brochure is actually for the red only model and I just assumed they upgraded the model.
The website for the Field Sport sights has bot model listed though the specs for the D007R only has 5 settings on the website.

I couldn't wait for the riser to arrive from Amazon, so I ordered one from Primary Arms. I mounted the Field Sport Red/Green Dot on my S&W M&P 15-22. Not sure when I'll get to the range to zero and check it out.

Re: Cheap Red Dot Test - Impressed me enough to try one
Took my M&P with the Field Sport D007RG out fpr a trial at PSC. Shot most groups at 25 yards after sight in with 5 to 10 shots. I shot 10 rounds at a 75 yard target and the shots were all high by a significant amount. I used the #2 setting on the green dot with bright sun and the dot was easily visible. I didn't change brightness or color and left the sight turned on the entire period. The sights on my M&P are fixed so I removed the front and rear sights for the 75 yard target. I have ordered some MagPul fold downs for it. I didn't bang on the sight or immerse it. I had to check my deer rifles and my little Marlin 39 lever gun I use on turkeys, so I didn't get to do every thing I want to do with the red dot. I had put a Browning Reflex on my Buck Mark pistol and I didn't have time to check it either due to shooting hours changing for CST. (I forgot the times changed) Other that the 75 yard group being strangely high I thought it's worth 23 bucks. Next time I'm going to bang on it a few times.

Thanks. It beats shooting with open sights for sure. We'll have to compare Red Dots next time.WildBill wrote:Nice shooting!
