I recently purchased a firearm at the Academy in Wichita Falls. Filled out the 4473, they filled out some other form (some in-house form for inventory purposes?), and I had to verify the serial number matched the paperwork. They apologized a couple of times about the paperwork, citing the "Feds" as the reason for all of it. I said how I thought the ATF were a rather picky bunch and they simply nodded agreement with a somewhat resigned look on their faces. Still, I never saw anyone call anything in, my paperwork stayed at the counter, and it only took about 20 minutes, all total. I did provide my LTC as identification, though.

Just a guess, but I think maybe their insurance company is dictating them walking us to the counter. Dunno.

I bought my Colt GC at Cabela's back in May or so and took about 15-20 minutes from the time I said I wanted it. Yeah, they double checked a few things, but it didn't take long. And they let take it right from the register in the back by the firearms area on my own. No one walked me to the door with it.

IIRC, it took a little longer 5 years ago when I go the 21SF, but I don't think they walked me to the door then either.

Ya'll must look suspicious or something. :headscratch

I just went through the same thing to buy a Ruger 10/22 last week. I used my LTC and the whole process took 30 minutes. No one walked me to the door. What's the big deal? I presume they have checks and balances to protect themselves.

I have bought guns / completed FFL transfers at around 9 locations in the Houston area. My wait time has ranged from 15 to 45 minutes. When it is at the longer end of the spectrum, I just assume that the place has had issues in the past. Either way, it's not a huge deal for me. I just always make sure that allow for a full 45 minute wait, and I am sometimes pleasantly surprised.

This is also a reason why private sales are nice.

I buy online (gunbroker) and my FFL guy would get me done out of his place in 10mins with $10 out of pocket.

My wife bought her Shield at Cabelas a couple of years ago. Filled out the 4473 electronically, used her LTC, and we were out of there in about 15 mins. We carried the pistol from the register back by the gun bar, no employee escort to the front door.

It must depend on which Cabelas we're talking about. The one local to me - Fort Worth - seems to make a bigger deal out of gun purchases than my other local FFLs do......making it take longer, with additional hoops to jump through. But like with Abraham, it doesn't upset me that much. On the other hand, I've only purchased three guns there over the 10+ years I've lived in Texas - two pump action shotguns and a .38 revolver - so it's not like a large part of my life has been frittered away waiting for Cabelas' glacial bureaucracy to proceed apace.

I had same experience at Academy in Arlington.

I don't buy guns very often, but I don't mind it being a slow transaction. It gives be a chance to absorb it, check out the accessories ammo choices, and shop for my next gun. Buying guns is one of the few pleasant shopping experiences I have. Much nicer than buying shoes or groceries.
