mrvmax wrote:Yep, there's a world of difference in the better knives. I have three Benchmades and my favorite is my Zero Tolerance. I've tried Emerson too but my ZT opens like an auto (but it's not). I have some ESEE knives for hunting too. I've been tempted to buy a Microtech auto but haven't wanted to part with the money yet.
my favorite for defense is the Spyderco Emerson wave, never owned an emerson but that wave design is pretty nice for deploying as you draw the knife
ive got a spyderco civilian too, that beast would certainly do some damage if required but its huge

I'm hard on knives at work, so I carry Kershaws there. Any other time, it's my Benchmade. Mine is very similar to the one pictured, but with a clipped point. I dearly love that knife. My wife bought it for me a few Christmases ago. I think she paid $130 for it, which was the best price I had seen on that model (usually $200). You managed to beat it by $10. Congrats! You'll love the way it holds an edge.
ETA: Had to look it up, but mine is the 943.

Not too far off-topic, so bear with me.
Remember the famous quotation from Townsend Whelen? "Only accurate rifles are interesting." Same can be applied to knives: only sharp blades are interesting. (You can quote me on that.)
A year ago, I went over to a friend's house for an afternoon of shared-tool gun tinkering. His detached garage is a dedicated workshop with punches and presses and belt sanders and stuff I didn't have. At one point, I heard a small electric motor whir, then the sound of finely grinding metal. Didn't think anything of it; kept doing what I was doing.
About a minute later I looked up and saw him moving a knife through an electric sharpener. I walked over; took a closer look. He was carefully pulling what looked to be a top-end Benchmade folder through a cut-rate sharpener designed for basic kitchen cutlery.
I asked him what he was doing...the exact terms used can't be quoted on the Forum.
Mind you, this is a guy who vehemently believes that, for a rifle intended for use at 200 yards or over, you should spend more on the glass than you do the rifle. I Googled one of his scopes and for months after, I kept seeing GoogleAds on sites presenting me with pictures of and links to $3,500+ Schmidt & Bender options.
I respect edged tools; don't like ones of poor quality. You don't put a $99 scope on a $3,000 dollar rifle any more than you try to sharpen a beautiful Benchmade with a $19.95 electric one-size-fits all grinding stone disaster.
Even a modest rifle benefits from a good scope. Even the most modest blade benefits from a good sharpening system. After all, we've been scrutinizing and studying the sharpening of bronze, iron, and steel blades for a couple of millennia longer than we've been putting optics on rifles.
This is what I opted for:

If you have cheap kitchen knives and want them to at least saw through a hunk of prime rib with some effort, a cheap electric knife sharpener may do. If you have a piece of quality steel, it deserves the edge for which it was intended.

NOW I get it!
Now I understand why people are willing to pay so much for a Benchmade knife.
My son and I went to the 5.11 storefront in Frisco for their Black Friday sale. They had 25% off on everything in the store, AND they were giving out $10 off coupon cards. I got myself a messenger bag and a tote purse for my wife, and I saw they were distributors of Benchmade knives. I picked up a 940-2 model with an Osborne designed reverse tanto blade of S30V steel, and black G20 scales. MSRP is $200, 5.11 had it listed at $173. Taking 25% off brought that down to $130, and with the $10 off card, I ended up paying $120 for this knife.
My son bought a 940 a while back, and after handling it, I totally got the attraction. I would have loved to have one, but there just wasn't any way I could justify paying $190 at Amazon.com for one. But at $120, I think I scored.

Don't ever touch an Emerson custom, much more addictive and very, very expensive.

Hmmm? Thanks for sharing, TAM.
I have a Benchmade knife similar to that that I found behind a barracks when doing a job at Ft Bragg, home of the SOF and 82nd Airborne, some 16 years ago. It was kinda'....uh, messy?
I bet mine has a more interesting history than does yours?

No doubt yours has a more interesting history. Mine has been used primarily to open packages of beef jerkey.
What do you mean by "messy"?
