I hike a lot in the Southwestern US. Never go without at least one firearm (in addition to all my other survival gear). I usually carry my Sig 239 in .40 cal. I just bought a Chiappa Ridgerunner takedown rifle in 45-70 for a longer engagement range. My son will likely pack that, since he is 6' 4". As an example of why we do this:
Sign in Coronado National Park in South AZ, along the Mexican border. Last time we were there, I didn't see a single person who wasn't armed.
