I don't care how it eventually plays out. Know that the tribal Police can sure put a crimp in your day if you are doing anything they deam illegal. I have news for you. Some Tribal members do not like the white eye to begin with and they can ruin your day no matter what the final disposition is. So like it or not, they do wield power over anyone on tribal land

Well ain't no redskin gonna deprive this cowboy of his six shooter without a fight... :biggrinjester:

Serious question...are there any Indian Reservations or Tribal Lands in Texas? If not, how come? Why do only Sooners get tax free cigarettes and legal gambling? :???:

We have the Tigwa ( sp ) tribe here in El Paso. Gas is cheaper. I don't smoke so I couldn't comment on cigarette prices. They have been in a constant battle with the State over the right to gamble. Funny thing the tribe voted to accept 1/16 Indian blood instead of 1/8 th because of all the Mexican blood. The tribe is a joke in my eyes.

When they played Cowboys and Indians in Texas, the Cowboys won. :biggrinjester:

More seriously, the Indian Removal Act was passed in 1830 when Texas was still part of Mexico. Starting in 1831, the Choctaw were the first to be removed from their land and forcibly relocated West of the Mississippi River. The Cherokee were last in 1838 and Texas didn't become part of the USA until 1845.

No doubt a crooked cop can ruin your whole day. However, I think it's unfair to paint tribal police with a broad brush. From what I have seen, one is more likely to run afoul of a crooked cop in Dallas or Olmos Park than an Indian reservation.

I kind of thought that it was something like that. No federal treaties with Indian "Nations" existed for Texas since it wasn't part of the US...makes sense. No tax free cigarettes and casinos for Texas... :???:

There is one place north east of Houston - the Alabama-Coushatta Indian Reservation. I don't know any of the history or how it came about or anything like that.

Interestingly, though, they did have a casino there for a while. I know because my wife and I were there visiting at the time. This was long ago (20-30 years?). I think it was shortly after the Oklahoma tribes' casinos started up. I guess the Texas tribe figured they would get in on the action, too.

Didn't last long, though (literally only a couple of months as I recall). The Texas AG shut them down. Again, don't know any of the details, just remembering...

I have no idea how you read into my statement that tribal Police could be crooked. I'm just stating that ty do have the ability to detain a non tribal member (DUI as an example) and Hold you for procecution ( by the state I guess ).

Don't forget the Kickapoo's Lucky Eagle Casino in Eagle Pass. It was also my understanding that Naskila Gaming near Livingston was still in operation (Alabama-Coushatta).

Who bashed Cops? I didn't see that anywhere.
:iagree:

Nobody based cops. They just said the law and supreme court decisions don't matter. Cops ignore the law and supreme court decisions. They abuse their power to harass law abiding people. P.S. They're racist.

No cop bashing here!

bigtek,

I trust you're joking, if not, I guess you're pushing the envelope until it explodes...

Good luck to you.

If I am not mistaken, I think they have re-opened their casino.

I am a citizen of the Muscogee Creek Nation. I even vote in our tribal elections by absentee ballot due to not living on tribal nation land. Our police are called the Lighthorse Police. I hate to say I have not visited in a long time.

Wow, Smokey. I read through some of the history in the links. What a mess! They had a reservation, then the Feds terminated the reservation and turned administration over the Texas, but then the Texas AG said the Texas Constitution prohibited that, so then the Feds had to restore reservation status, but it included gambling, but Texas prohibits gambling, so the Feds had to re-do the restoration again to exclude gambling, then the tribe took them to court to be recognized the same as all other tribes so they could have gambling (and apparently got temporary court approval?), and now they're working to get Texas legislation passed to give them permanent permission to have gambling on the reservation. Or something like that anyway. Sheesh!!! Wears me out just reading about it!

But anyway, looks like you and JustSomeOldGuy are correct in that they apparently do currently have gambling ("gaming") on their reservation, at least for now. Bottom line for me, though, is simply that I'm not a gambler, so I never kept up with the situation shortly after we happened to be there and hearing a little about it those many years ago.

But good luck to them (y'all). I hope it all gets worked out. Looks like it's been dragging on for a loooooong time!

Sorry, Venus Pax. Didn't mean to highjack your thread. I think we can officially call this horse dead. Now maybe we can get back to your original topic!

The Tiguas here had gambling ( blackjack and slots I think ). The State sued to prevent gambling and won. The Tiguas tied the winning tickets not direct money. The State declared that gambling, sued and won. The Tiguas have sued to return to gambling and lost. Casino is a big musical venue now I believe. Tiguas still have some legal action pending. No gambling at the moment.

At a couple of spots where I’ve gassed up along I-40 on my way to California, I’m pretty sure I was on tribal land. I was carrying at the time. I also saw zero tribal police, although I did occasionally spot a NM or AZ state trooper car. But these places are just gas/food stops along the modern-day “mother road”. It would not do to harass customers and drive off business, which is 99% NOT Native American. So my guess is that, unless you’re acting a complete fool, you’d never see tribal police in those places.
