Years ago I had a mouse in the dashboard, it was in the blower for the heater. One day I put the switch on and turned the key, got it, heard something in the blower. A few days later it started to stink, I couldn't figure out how to get to it. For months my car stunk, I couldn't give anyone a ride because it smelled so bad.
Your story reminded me of a "Superintendent" I worked with once, he said he had a rat in his truck on the Dashboard. The guy told this story in front of of the whole crew.
Quote: "I saw the rat on the dashboard so I took a WATER HOSE and tryed to get it out of the truck, then it wouldn't start after that". Everyone looked dumbfounded by this guy since he did something so outrageously Dumb! Everyone had a good laugh! Plus he was the Boss go figure huh?

They should have plenty of food to eat.
Some people say that you shouldn't feed your mouser cats but ours have food out during the day and it hasn't slowed them down. I figure if I feed them they have the energy they need to catch the mice and they know where the food is so they stay home instead of wandering.
My stepdad put out a little food. Just enough to keep the two, basically feral, cats around.

The above link is to Mesquite's feral cat "mouser" program. Mesquite is in Dallas County.

The above link is to Austin's similar program.
If one googles around, one could probably find similar programs close to wherever in Texas.

I had a John Deere lawn tractor out on my property, the pack rats moved in, they ate all the red plastic on the battery and left a generalized mess behind. One would think that they would get shocked. Saw this on the internet

Must be related to climate change or CO2 or something similar. Let's blame Trump.

Had that happen with a '68 Impala station wagon. On the Texas/Mexico border. Car stank for a year, smelled for one more. A few years later, was changing out a leaking heater core, found the mummified mouse corpse in one of the blower vent lines near the airbox.

Have two friends with large ranches West of Fort Stockton. Neither one has been able to keep cats around due to Owls.

I had some mice set up shop under my hood earlier this year. Chewed through a cable and had a semi-costly repair. I bought a two pack of Irish Spring soap from the dollar store. I shaved the first one into all the little nooks and crannies in the engine compartment where there looked to be bedding, then drilled a hole in the middle of the second one and zip-tied the whole bar to a cable. They dislike the smell from what I hear. I haven't had a problem since.

Last year my wifes headlight went out on her 3 month old Escape. Took it to the dealer and squirrels had made a nest and chewed through some wiring.

Had rats make a nest under the hood of my Prius and chew the wires. Cost insurance over $1500 and they didn’t even charge me my deductible. The wire cover an a lot of cars is made from soy beans. There was a class action law suit at one time.
