Surprised there was not some sort of big fireplace, rather than having barrels on fire. BTW why did they have barrels? Did they have them on site already or was someone sent out to buy barrels. Not even sure where you would buy a barrel. Haven't seen them at Home Depot. If they had them on site, why? In case they needed to ship someone home?
Any US facility housing Classified and/or sensitive information is supposed to have an emergency destruction plan. Everyone that I worked at did. Those plans varied as to their realistic ability be carried out. I would guess the Chinese have the same requirement and probably, being a large bureaucracy, similar problems.

If they took over existing buildings to use as their consulate, there may have not been any thing in the building suitable for quickly destroying documents, so they may have acquired These drums you talk about. (I didn’t see them, were they 55 gallon drums? I wouldn’t think those would be hard to find.)

The embassy that I worked out of back in the early 70s had a large incinerator that we utilized for a few days before the deadline for us to leave the country.

Unless you are one of the neocons who is always looking for a war to involve the country in.

Waiting for some federal judge far from Houston to issue an injunction against the President’s order.
