Re: my truck is out of comission
What's your budget? Bikes are in high demand because of gas prices, so anything that runs and is in decent shape is going to cost you at least $800-1,500. There are a lot of old trucks out there in that range.
Re: my truck is out of comission
i can do about that range gas is a big part of why i want a bike also insurance and with winter coming on i figured they would be in less demand i dont need anything nice. if it runs i can do some work on it as i go along i hope i dont have to shoot someone when i go look at a bikeKBCraig wrote:What's your budget? Re: my truck is out of comission
wow nice bike!

http://www.bikepics.com/yamaha/xz550/82/pics.asp" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
1st thing you do is change ALL the fluids...ensure you use motorcycle specific antifreeze (since its watercooled), change your oil (a good 20w50 is good, even better is a synthetic diesel oil 15w40) you want to stay away from the oils that have "energy conserving" as a wet bath clutch will slip badly and burn out quickly
Change the rear diff fluid with good heavy gear oil (if you have a grease zerk on the spindle then put about 5-10 shots in it)
Check the tires, if they look dry rotter you MUST replace them (having a tire shred at 70mph will KILL you!)
Drain the front brake caliper completely and then re-fill with fresh fluid..a bike like that may have the front calipers seized and you DON'T want the front calipers to seize unless you want to join the over the bars club!
Lubricate the control cables!! My bike snapped the ferrule off of the throttle cable about 1/10th of a second before I leaned into traffic on 59N by Fry's...luckily it was the throttle open cable and not the throttle closed...bike dropped to idle instead of full throttle..and I was stranded ON the freeway till my wife brought the van and we got it home!
I had a '92 SilverWing..it was practically bullet proof..that bike looks pretty daggum tough as well!
If you ever wanna get rid of it let me know!!!!!
Ride safe, keep it shiny side up!
Here this will help you too!

Re: my truck is out of comission
By the way..this is my old bike

This bike sat for 6 years in my brother in laws backyard, then another 2 years under my carport..my wife said fix it or get rid of it..so I pulled the carbs and my boss at work (former Yamaha mechanic) cleaned the carbs and showed me how to wash the rust/junk out of the tank...I got a new starter from Lands Cycles, battery from walmart, drained the old oil and topped off, put some fresh gas in the tank...it fired up like it had never been sitting..I put approx 2400 miles on it after I put about $500 into it (new tires, rebuilt the brakes, seats recovered, bought headlight assembly from Lands..minor work here and there) It still had the original plugs and wires!!! I really miss the old bird!

Re: my truck is out of comission
My 250 will do over 100. (Per the published specs, because I would never drive that fast...) I have been averaging around 65 mpg over the last 3 months.WarHawk-AVG wrote: 10 miles to work, as long as you ain't jumping on the freeway you should be good to go..I have a 34mile one way trip to work (down 225, 45N, 59S all freeway)..my V-Star 650 is fine, if you don't go freeway speeds then you don't need anything over 500cc (the smaller the engine the better the gas mileage...a 250 can go 70mph (about max it can go) but it can do it at 60-70mpg!)

lunchbox, sorry to hear about your truck. Mine just went south as well. :( Glad to see you got a bike just in time for winter though! Enjoy it and be careful out there!
