That's another urban legend. The law doesn't differentiate between a gun that is loaded or unloaded.

Okay, I was just making a point to others who thought that it might be legal.

I find it hard to believe anyone would be stupid enough to work in a higher risk establishment, make themselves a primary target by wearing a handgun openly, and then not even have it loaded!

+1 - it is like asking for trouble because you are giving a bad person a leg up on you.

The same unfortunately applies to carrying loaded/unloaded. Imagine if you are at gunpoint and being asked to empty your pockets. You have a gun in there but, well, it is not loaded (or a round is not in the chamber). It will only make things worse for you as you a) cannot use it and b) are giving the perp another weapon to use against you (or someone else).

§ 46.15. NONAPPLICABILITY.
(a) Sections 46.02 and 46.03 do not apply ...
(4) is engaging in lawful hunting, fishing, or other
sporting activity on the immediate premises where the activity is
conducted, or is en route between the premises and the actor's
residence, if the weapon is a type commonly used in the activity;

Maybe the owner of the premises could define a sport called "walking around carrying a loaded gun." This particular activity wouldn't involve actual shooting, which would usually not permitted in the store, just carrying it around.

Unless you consider eating a sport, any dinner guest would be violating the knife statute.
