My son has such a device which replaces the barrel bushing in his 1911. We tried his gun out at the range with it on, and while it did reduce muzzle flip a small but noticeable amount, it wasn't a dramatic difference. In the end, he took it off and never put it back on. Although we shot it in broad daylight, it occurred to me at the time that, as your above Glock picture demonstrates, there is a significant amount of muzzle flash directed upwards into the shooter's line of sight, and that this upward muzzle flash in low light could easily blind the shooter to his own sight picture for follow-up shots.

I'm glad this thread has gone as many pages as it has. There is lots of good information in it. What I've taken away from it for my own knowledge base is the emphasis on using the car as a weapon, and for evasion purposes, rather than shooting it out from inside the car if it can at all be avoided. My mindset going into this discussion has been based on my own lack of mobility. I have several more or less physically debilitating issues above and beyond my level of physical conditioning, which means that running and gunning are out the question for me. I simply can't move fast enough to be effective that way. Indeed, one of the reasons I chose to start carrying a pistol in the first place is in recognition of the fact that I am far less well able to defend myself by physical means at this point in my life than I was when I was much younger, and it is another reason why I tend to me much more careful these days about where I go. That being said, I can drive. I am a very good driver, with a lot of actual road course racetrack experience, and I am fairly confident about what can and cannot be done with a vehicle.

With that in mind, I believe I will start traveling with a backup pistol (in my regular carry caliber) stored in the car instead of on my person. And if I am ever confronted with a situation from inside my vehicle, I'm going to concentrate on evasion first, and firearm presentation only if evasion is not possible.
