Here's an odd question... is there an appearance requirement? IE, facial hair, hair length....

I'm not a long-hair but I usually (not currently) have a goatee.

Just curious if they abide by military requirements.

Not an odd question at all. Yes, military hair standards. Not necessarily short, short, high and tight - but trim, off the ears and collar, facial hair follows army standards. I believe that means mil spec mustache, no beards.

There should be an set of weight control standards. It's good to volunteer but, if you're in uniform, get in shape. I've got 25 years plus, active and ng. Been deployed 3 times for a total of 42 months and still without a gut.

As far as the TXSG, there is a height and weight standard. Not quite as strict as the NG, but it is there.

I agree, part of being the part is looking the part.....

Well, I'm glad to be lighter just months before my 40th birthday than I was at 30. I'm a little over 6'3" and don't weigh 210, so I know I'm fine with the height/weight chart.

My local unit isn't having a recruit day this month, so I have to wait for next.

I was also interested in joining the state guard and thought I'd bump this so it may catch the attention of others. Lots of good info here.

Stephenville is 42 miles from Mineral Wells and 65 miles from Gatesville, the 2 nearest locations. Gatesville is 2nd Regiment (I'm 2nd, although my subordinate unit drills in San Marcos 110 miles south of 2nd Regt HQ in Gatesville). Mineral Wells is 4th Regt.

Typically, depending on the Commanding Officer and the 1SG, and the deployment, yes, you can carry. Obviously, it is not open carry. There is typically no rule against carrying concealed, however, showing of the firearm is typically very limited for obvious reasons: we are not combat troops... we are humanitarians and volunteers.

There are certain missions that a deployment would be considered highly investigative and support oriented... and those are dependent upon mission orders. Obviously, in short, it all depends.

I moved to Texas in 1998, but only became aware of the Texas State Guard in the last couple years, for some reason. Sounds like an excellent organization.
