smurf...i just realized you're up here in CS...I think I already knew that but forgot.

You can use whatever gun you want at champions. Go in and fondle a few and see what fits your hand right, feels right. Use it during your one on one.

I suggest 9mm for ammo cost, but its whatever.

Also - if you would like to meet up and go to the range, I can show you some basic gun stuff. We can rent a G19 and you can get more practice. I'm like 2 min from the range and know the staff fairly well.

I have been delaying taking the CHL class myself as my wife wants to take it with me (and I want her to, too, as I don't think she would do it alone). She hadn't shot anything other than a .22, and was intimidated by the muzzle flip of any handgun larger in caliber. I definitely wanted her to have experience with something .380 or better BEFORE we took the class and have been working with her at the range a few times to get there. Others had mentioned that a husband might not be the best choice for that, but I'm very patient and she didn't want anyone else. I also wanted to make sure it would be fun for her every step of the way.

Good news! Sunday at the range she tried a .380 for the first time, and after several rounds I convinced her that the little .380 she just fired had more flip than the GLOCK 19 I have. She finally decided to give it a try and she agreed. She finished off the box of .380 ammo and we spent the next 1.5 hours or so burning up another 250 rounds of 9mm through the G19. With the last two 15-rnd mags, I put up a CHL target and although her grouping needs a little work, she got two bullseyes and scored points on all the other hits (not a single flier)!

Needless to say she was very impressed with herself (and I was, too!), and is now confident that even if we can't find her a defensive handgun in a decent caliber that fits her tiny hands before the next CHL class date (June 17th where we're taking it), she has no doubts or hesitation in using the G19 for the range test and knowing she'll pass.

I can't take all the credit for it though... last week Sgt. McGuire of the FWPD called (he gives the class) to answer a question I had left on his answering machine regarding class pricing and she mentioned to him that we were putting off taking the class until she could work up to the G19 at least. He told her it would be "a piece of cake" as he has "had little old ladies test with a GLOCK 9mm just fine, and quite often outshoot their husbands, but they had other pistols there she could use as well." Hearing that I think built up the competitive spirit in her just a tad more and helped "bring her over the edge" so to speak.

It took me a little longer than I expected (mainly due to other delays that kept us away from the range), but we're both finally registering for the next class in June! Wahoo!

I don't know how many different pistols you considered before settling on the Glock, but I would encourage you to take a look at the Springfield XD pistols. I visited Champion Firearms during my lunch break and these things feel GREAT! These pistols are cosmetically similar, but have many different features (grip safety, ambidextrous mag release, etc.). The grip is smaller than the Glock and fits my hand much better, and they are priced about the same or maybe slightly less.

When I bought my G19 last summer, I was pretty much set on buying the Glock and didn't really consider anything else. I LOVE my Glock, but will probably be adding an XD to my collection soon.

Obviously, you are free to do what you like. I am just suggesting the XD's incase you hadn't considered them. Either way you go, you will be choosing a quality firearm.

From one of the older guys. The XD is one to really look at. To each his own but from a died in the wool 1911 shooter, if I went to any other frame I believe it would be the SA XD's.

I carry a Glock 19, and I like it.

My co-worker bought a SD V10 ported model with the OD Green frame for $399.00 at Carter's Country on I10 in Houston. It was just old stock on sale. We shot it last weekend, and back to back with the Glock, it was easier to shoot the XD. A 9mm is already easy to shoot, but when ported, it's extremely easy to shoot!
