I went to NYC in 1998 and we literally ran from the Empire State Building to Times Square where our hotel was because it was getting dark. I am looking out my window and I see old people walking around so we decide to go back out and there were cops every where. And talk about nice people, The cop gave me directions to a great pizza place, everytime I took out a map to orient myself people would ask me where I was going, they would give me directions and tell me which train to take. All in All it was great, now the people in Connecticut where my inlaws live they were rude. NYC people nice as could be.

Just take money, there are lots of stuff to see and buy. If you want to see any shows go to TKTS in times square and get real cheap matinee shows.

Also buy the day pass for the subway, You can use it to get around.

If you have and Iphone or a Palm Pre you can download interactive subway and bus maps to make life easier.

Seriously, its a good place to 'visit'. I lived there, never once with a problem... (note that I am originally from southeast tx).

No guns, sorry. No long guns as far as I know.

Don't be paranoid, it's safer than Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio.

Keep in mind that most of the people in New York make decent money, have jobs and arn't pickpockets. You can't pick enough pockets in a month to cover rent on a mid west side apartment.

Common sense goes a long way. If you fly into JFK don't let your first taste of NYC be hanging out around the Jamica subway station.
