Just how much and what kind of stuff is being sold by the gov't as legitimate surplus?
I always figured the surplus stores went away because supplies dried up.

the one i went to was mostly new China made stuff .
the only thing i remember that was legit was the ammo boxes .
and i really wouldn't be surprised if they didn't have "made in China" somewhere on them .

thanks for the info . i'm going to stop by there and check them out .
well , i went by there today ..Thanks Mithras61
it was by far the best one yet . they have Maxpedition products , 5.11 stuff , and lots of other goodies .

Surplus stores as surplus stores:there are a few but not many.
This post reminded me of the one that got away. Not anything CCW. It was a nuclear arming panel for a nuclear missile launch control.
I was going to mount it next to the door and rig all the lights to blink, etc. But they wanted more that I was willing to spend, so... They had drop tanks, and other cool stuff. Ammo cans by the truck load.
It was a long time ago. Wish there were still some around....

Oh the stories I could tell you about what the real Army surplus stores used to be like would make your mouth water. As a kid growing up in Fort Worth there were 2 HUGE surplus stores(in the CBD where the Tarrant County Convention Center is now) that my best friend and I used to go to. This was right after the Korean War when there were TONS of surplus stuff of all types were on the market. Even guns, although no U.S. guns that I can remember.
Thanks for the memories.

The one in Granbury occasionally has some other odd bits of surplus as well. I picked up a pair of used Safariland Comp Is for my Model 10 there for $3 each, and a double pouch for them for $2.
FWIW, if you want cheap Chinese novelty junk,
http://www.dealextreme.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; has much better prices...and while most of the lowest priced stuff is cheap novelty junk, some of their products are actually pretty good. The site is down at the moment, but next time I get around to placing an order with them, I'm planning to pick up a few more of their $2-3 universal accessory thingies - basically a pair of velcro straps and a rubber spacer for mounting lights to long guns. It's not solid enough for a laser or a scope, but it sure beats taping a light to the barrel. The free shipping takes 2-3 weeks, but heck, it's free.

Joe817 - the one I was talking about was near where Angelo's Barbecue is now!

It was more of a surplus store and back lot: vehicles, parts of airplanes, etc. etc.

That might have been Omaha Surplus, before they moved to a bigger location down the street from Angelo's about a block. Omaha is still there on White Settlement.

You DO know Ft.Worth rather well.
