I was looking at AmmoToGo tonight and saw some buck and ball 12 gauge ammo. Basically as .65 ball with 6 00 buck. Anyone know anything about how that would work for self defence. Offhand it seems like it should work fine and I think during the Civil War some Southern cavalry units used something like this. On the other hand, I don't really see the advantage over 00 buck.

Yep, what he said. Cabela's always has some sort of selection of buckshot. If you're fond of buying it by the case, they tend to have plenty of Estate #4B for a decent price. It makes great practice ammo, not too hot, but still good power for practicing similar to normal 00 loads. Otherwise, there's lots of 5-boxers of different 00 loads, as well as sometimes 25-boxers if you time it right. Also, there are slugs galore, and usually some 20 or 25-boxers of those as well.
