I have a Hi Power and love it to pieces. If you're looking for a good, reliable and handy 9mm carry, I suggest that you look at the SA XD 9mm SC. It carries well and is plenty of gun for SD with lots of bullets.

Above having been said, nothing except maybe a Colt SA Peacemaker has the romance attached to it that a 1911 does.

I have a M&P 9C for CC and I love it. Choice came down to the XD and M&P. Went with the 9C for two reasons width and back strap replacements.

I'm now looking for that ultimate piece. Most of my buddies have gone the 1911 ,45acp route.

I do like the high end 9mm route because the cost difference per round will eat up and difference in cost in no time.

I've handeled a Hi Power at BPS and it feels so good in my hand.

If you want a Classic .45 APC Pistol Designed by Browning, go with a 1911. If you want a 9mm pistol designed by Browning go with a Browning Hi Power.

I have a Browning in 9mm and in 40S&W, and I love them both. The Browning MKIII is the best (atleast I think so.

I've had limited experince with 1911s, I like the Rockland Armory 1911 the best of the 3 I've tried, but then again, the other two I tried were sub par and rentals

I don't see how it is wrong (I do understand what you are saying). I think it is a great evolution of the 1911 to go 9mm. My choice would be a STI. They make a wide range of 1911's in 9mm. They come in 5", 4.15", 3.9", 3", and 3.4".

That's the beauty of the 1911 'platform' with so many suppliers of parts and accessories, there's hardly a limit to the changes you can make or the calibres that you can convert it to.

The following are (or have been) available as factory calibres AFAIK:

45ACP (obviously), 9mmLuger (aka 9mm), 38 Super, 40 S&W, 10mm, 9x23 Winchester, 9x25 Dillon, 45 Super, 460 Rowland, 22lr

Taurus 1911 with Hogue grips is real comfortable. Have a little over 500 rounds through mine and have had zero issues.
