Yes, every servicemember is a "Soldier" by definition and we are ALL equal but some take offense to being called a soldier as it is common practice to associate soldier with the Army!

Whatever they are called or want to be called, I call them Americas Heroes.

Well put my friend. I agree.

While we are at it.
Marines are "Marines" "Leather necks" or "Jarheads" you call one a "soldier" and you better prepare to be talked to by hand.
Navy are "Sailors" "Swabbies" or "Squid" call one a soldier and see above.
Air Force are "Airmen" "Zoomies" or "Wing nuts" call one a soldier and see above
Army are "Soldiers" "Grunts" "Doggies" or "G. I.s" call one any of the terms above and be prepared talked to by hand.
You don't call a graduate of UT an Aggie do you? Or a graduate of A&M a Longhorn? Try it you may get talked to by hand.

So yeah, I'm familiar with all the different names.
Calling them a Solider in no Diminishes what they have done for our country.

marksiwel,
No calling a Marine, Sailor, Airman or, Soldier a Soldier doesn't diminish what they did for their country. But, calling any of the first three "Soldier" diminishes them. I am Airborne qualified I am a Paratrooper yes I was a Soldier when I was in the Army but, I was. not simply a "Soldier." In my younger days I could run farther, carry a heavier load and fight harder and longer than a mere "Soldier." Calling a member of any of the Armed Forces other than Army "Soldier" is akin to calling a Rhodes Scholar a "student" or the Pope a priest.
Please render the members of our Armed Forces the respect they deserve and refer to them by their proper titles.
Thank you,
Morris Jones (MoJo)

very well said.
marsiwel,
I notice that you have stated that family members have served but you have said nothing about yourself serving. There is ablsolutely nothing wrong having never served. However, if you have not please dont talk as if you are educated on the subject. As mojo put it earlier each branch has their own names their service members are called. This is part of their identity. You do not join the Army to be a Sailor, you do not join the Air Force to be a Marine, and you do not join the Marines to be a Soldier. If you read the Creeds of the Sailor or Airman (Could not find one for the Marines other than the Rifelman's Creed) you will find what they are and that there is no mention of them being soldiers. Only in the Soldier's Creed will you find someone being called a soldier and the Soldier's Creed is an Army Creed. To call us all soldiers is very disrespectful to those of us who are not. I take great pride in the uniform that I wear and fact that I have earned the right to be called an American Soldier. I know others here on this forum take great pride in the uniforms that they wear/wore and the in the fact that they earned the right to be called Marine, Sailor or Airman. So I ask that you do not disrespect us and lump us all together as if we are the same. We are multiple forces with sepearte identities that come together as one and form the United States Military.

Seriously? Seriously? Yes I have never served, something which was a personal choice seeing as I come from a long military tradition in my family and totally irrelevant to this thread.. I am greatly respectful of those who serve in the military, donate books, magazines,DVDs and comics to troops overseas. But please dont tell me "However, if you have not please dont talk as if you are educated on the subject" to me that equals "Shut up because haven't been there or done that" never said I did, in fact if that was the attitude for half the topics on these threads no one could say ANYTHING or even comment. Most of us here have never been LEO but we all seem to comment on their actions, should we all just "Shut up"? Most of us have never shot at or shown aggression toward a fellow human but we talk about what kind of ammo, what kind of gun and shot placement, should we just "Shut up"?
Its very hard to bring up Military Service with those who have served because they are Super Sensitive about it, dont blame them what with the media being what it is. Any criticism of the Military or the way it "Works" by outsiders is almost automatically met with "You never did it, so shut your pie hole" but you can find almost the same criticism by former Military. I was never in the military, I feel no shame for it. But there tend to be some "Knee Jerk" reactions going on
Let me break it down
I said Marines were soldiers to Purplehood in what I consider a ribbing matter,a few months ago.
Then I start a thread about how, Hey Where is Purplehood, he was a good egg where did he go?
Then several pages later some Newbie starts saying he left because I called him a soldier or some garbage. I felt offended I put him in his place with FACTS (Notice no one has gone through and picked apart the links I posted, no one noticed the angelfire site was written by a Marine? tsk tsk)
Then its spun out of control, I respect your service, but its not about you, its about an interaction with a former poster, and then some guy being a thug, me correcting it, and then I get 2 pages of people telling me that they were in the military and that I should know better and shut my pie hole.
I contacted a Mod, if he would lock the thread, because frankly all I wanted to know is where Purplehood was, not be lectured by my betters. I't's disappointing that other threads get locked easier than this, but this thread has spun out of control (for which I am responsible) and even when I report as such, nothing, nada. Not even a PM sent.
As a compromise, even though I am stil technically RIGHT to call a Marine, a Soldier, I will refer to them as Marines in the future as well as the other respected branches, by their titles, because I frankly dont want to deal with 3 pages of THIS
I'm done on the matter

I feel left out. What happened to our nation's oldest seagoing military service?
That's OK. We have two mottos -- "Semper Paratus" and "Our security lies in our obscurity."

OK folks, this thread has moved off topic. Please bring it back and keep the discussions civil or the thread will be locked.

I hope what I'm about to post is on topic - I think it is, within the scope at least.
The act of being egregiously offended by a word (pick your favorite) is currently popular. This is a direct byproduct of Political Correctness. Political Correctness is something I think most here find rather dubious. We have thicker skins than the P.C. crowd. At least, I hope we do.
I'm ex military and if someone were to call me a sailor (I was a soldier on the pointy end of the spear type) I would laugh - in earnest.
