I believe that because of the increase in government workers (census workers) that the FBI is gonna be swamped for a little while. It's gonna slow down the DPS a little bit, but hopefully not too much.

Yeah, I've been a little concerned about that, but I guess it's out of my hands so there's not much point and worrying about it...

I wouldn't worry about it yet. I don't think it starts until late next month.
This is posted on the DPS website:
TXDPS has been notified by the FBI that all Fingerprint based background checks will be temporarily suspended beginning April 28, 2010 - May 3, 2010. The FBI Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) will be working with the U.S. Census Bureau to process more than 484,000 Fingerprints for Census Bureau workers.
Beginning May 4, 2010, TXDPS and the FBI will resume processing applicant fingerprints. It is important to note that the backlog of processing the fingerprint based background checks could take an additional two weeks. All applications will processed as quickly as possible once the FBI service returns to normal.
Although my bet would be that their window of 4/28 to 5/3 may be a tad optimistic. I bet it goes longer than that.

Well rats!!!
I got tired of not having a pin number so I e-mailed for one only to find this...Application incomplete-missing information-Detailed letter has been sent.
I cant imagine what I did wrong as I looked over my paper work at least three times before sending it.
I guess I will find out soon enough.

Having your pin doesn't help the process any. I find myself checking several times a day waiting for the page to change from "Packet mailed to Applicant" to "Application Processing." They have had it 14 days now and not updated anything.
AHHHHHHHH! Just called DPS and apparently my Application already got kicked back to me because the Cert number I was given had already been used by another applicant.

Ooops! I am a dufus! On my eligibility affidavit, on demonstrating my legal residence, instead of initialing at line a or b, I wrote "A" on the line. I will send it back corrected tomorrow. Would everything else be fine if they kicked it back to me for this, or is this just the first mistake they found?

........Got home yesterday and in the mail the state has returned my finger print card and in the letter telling me I left something off.
As I am looking at it I am thinking it's the little box next to race called "ETH" which must stand for ethnicity...I guess??
Then after an interruption by a telephone call I gather up the cards and go into a better lighted room and find what they want.
They have both cards lightly marked with a yellow highlighter at the box "P.O.B."...I get it place of birth!!
But..This LITTLE rectangle is exactly half an inch wide and exactly 3/8th of an inch tall.
I can't believe they want me to put the name of the city, state and county I was born in there!!
More in the box next to it it says "LEAVE BLANK"....So as best I could I put the information in that minature box.
A bit of a rant here.
Do they actually believe a man with real man size hands can print that much info legibly in such a small confined space???
How did all you others do this??
Any way it's heading back to Austin via certified return receipt this morning.
Jeez!!

In my CHL class, the Sheriff's Deputy taking fingerprints told us to write the two-letter postal abbreviation of the state we were born in.
For me, that was "TX". That's all they told us to put in the P.O.B. box on the fingerprint cards.

I hope he's right Vic.
In the paper work that came with the application it states in place of birth the city, state, and county.
And as I said getting all that info in that tiny box was NOT easy.
Sloppy at best.

There is a section on the
application where you have to put city, state, and county. The
fingerprint card is where (I was told) that you only have to put the 2-letter abbreviation of the state you were born in.
I applied online, so I didn't have to deal with the paper application. The instructions you have may indeed say to put all that on the fingerprint cards as well as on the application.
The deputy that did the fingerprints for my class is the same deputy that does the fingerprints for all the classes at that facility, so I assume he would be correct. I don't think it hurts to put more than they need, as long as it is legible.
