You bring up an important point. I have a horizontal and like it. However, I THOUGHT that would be the more comfortable way to carry a single mag. My XD came with a dual mag carrier. I still want a single but in upright. I found the issue with the horizontal for me, is if I carry it for being accessible, then because it is longer it tends to stick out on the curve of my left hip. If I carry it farther back then it is uncomfortable when sitting. I could bring it farther around to say 9:00 o'clock on my left hip but that is where I carry my cell phone. So all of a sudden the verticle is easier to carry. As for grasping the horizontal I have not practiced much but found I had to pull it out and rotate into position. I think I found tip pointing down was better for me but I would have to evaluate again to be sure.

But you may have missed an important part of this. Where and how the magazine is kept on the belt will make a significant difference to how you draw it and feed it in. I only really learned this when SAPD switched to Glocks and they wanted all of us to carry the magazine holder in a horizontal position. It never felt natural to me since the Army had us carry them upright. I did experiment with different locations on the belt, and even with a 9 o'clock position in plainclothes. Each location and the orientation made a big difference.
When in uniform I also experimented with horizontal carry. The best position for me was on the strong side with the pouch opening facing the midline of the body and the pouch itself at about 1:00. Mags were inserted with bullets facing down so I ended up with the same grip as bullets forward in a weak side vertical pouch.

After much experimentation I ended up ditching the horizontal carry method because the mags and carrier created too much bulk and discomfort in that location. I went to weak side vertical carry with an open top friction retention carrier worn at about 10:30. Once I got that worked out I never looked back.

Yup, 10:30 vertical seems to work best for me as well.

If I am reading it I hold the left side with my left hand and turn the pages with my right hand. When I am done reading I roll it up and shove it under my left armpit.

Oh, just go ahead and admit it: you read it back-to-front, like everyone else.

Ok. With "gun magazines" I do check out the ads in the back before reading the rest.
