Does Anyone Carry Long Guns in Thier Vehicles????

I thought the whole point of carrying a long gun was in case you ended up in a situation where you needed the extra firepower... are the pistol-caliber carbines significantly more powerful than their handgun counterparts?

no expert but my understanding is the longer barrel results in a much higher velocity.

And they are more accurate at longer distances because of the barrel length and increased velocity and power.
The increased power comes from the fact that the bullet has the power from the powder pushing for a longer distance
(16" or more for a rifle barrel vs. 3" in the case of a sub-compact).

I'm no expert either but a quick Google search showed that the Hi Point carbine has a muzzle velocity of 1279fps vs the Beretta 92's 1161fps... I'm in a rush so I don't know if either were accurate. Doesn't seem like it would be worth that slight difference though...

Yeah, but it's not going to up the power and accuracy that much. A 9mm camp carbine is still shooting 9mm ammo and you might pick up another 150-200 fps or so (at most), but you're still not going to get into AR15 territory. And the accuracy increase for pistol calibers fired out of long guns is mostly because the sight radius is longer, and not so much because the bullet is more stable in flight. OTH, rifle calibers fired from carbine length barrels are going to be more stable and accurate... ...AND pack more energy. Give me a carbine length .223 rifle over a carbine length 9mm or .45 any day.

Pistol caliber carbines usually get a small increase in velocity over handgun length barrels but the main advantage is practical accuracy from a longer sight radius or optics, plus a more stable platform.

A real rifle or carbine is going to give you more ability to reach out and touch someone.

Bushmaster Carbon 15 looks like a good compromise for this purpose... not a bad price either (seen them as low as $800). Of course, I could buy two AK pistols for that price, but this would be lighter.



Slap a nice red dot sight on it (capable of co-witnessing in case you don't have time to turn it on) and add a simple sling and you have a great little defensive tool

Just remember that while pistol caliber carbines will only increase the velocity slightly over handguns, those 8-10" barrels on an AR will significantly reduce velocity, even to the point that they will often not create nearly as significant of a wound cavity as a 16" barrel.

I always carry my deer rifle with me during season, but I don't leave it in my truck when I'm not there. So does everyone else. Sometime we will have coffee with the cops before we go to the deer lease. I don't see a problem. I've been doing that since I was a teenager and I'm 77 now.
