Whelp - I suppose now that I'm here milling around again - I'll provide an update on my situation....I did wind up carrying my weapon to the Gurney Unit in Palestine... upon pulling up to the guard shack - I showed the guard my CHL, my FFL, and my DL, then told him I had a secured handgun locked in the kevlar bag, AND all ammo was locked in a secured locked box, and that both were secured to my front seat, then placed under the seat..... he called his supervisor who showed up on a golf cart....he confirmed that I was "good to go" - BUT, they wanted to know how much ammo I had - I unlocked the lock box, and revealed three 11 rnd mags full of hollow points, and one single that is always chambered.... he made a note of how much ammo I had, gave me some number to tell the guard upon leaving..... I ask IF he would like to see the gun, or check it, and was told, "No, that's alright. Enjoy your visit." ----- that was at the Gurney Unit in Palestine.... since then, my family member has been transferred to the Hutchins Unit located just south of Dallas (I-45 and I-20) - it's kinda hard to find, and like everyone else has said - it's in the sticks, and not easily located... anyway, I make the drive down to Hutchins - find the place - pull up the guard shack, and repeat the above mentioned procedure - showed him my DL, CHL, and FFL.... he called his superior, who showed up a few minutes later (she was a real 'looker' too) anyway, she checked everything out, and told me I was 'good to go' - this time they did not count the ammo, ask to see the weapon, or anything else - instead, I suppose they just took my word... anyway, I parked, went in, went through the search process, and was allowed in with no problem........about a month later, I go back, and once again, I carried my weapon with confidence that I would have no problem.... when I pulled into the driveway leading to the guard shack I noticed a large sign at the entrance... I stopped, and read the sign - I can't quote it, but basically it said NOBODY - not even a licensed carrier is allowed to carry a weapon past that point, and to do so would result in prosecution....absolutely NO exceptions to the rule..... with that, I became a bit confused because I didn't recall seeing that sign on my last trip...... so, I decided to drive to the guard shack, and ask what the deal was......I pulled up - explained that I was 'carrying' - showed him my DL, CHL, and FFL...he called his superior, and once again - the 'looker' (a very attractive woman) drove up in a van, and explained to me that someone from the 'parking lot clean up crew' had recently broken into a car, and stole some 'stuff' and as a result - NOBODY is allowed to carry a weapon past the guard shack.... she went on to tell me that her husband is a Dallas cop, and even he is not allowed to carry his weapon onto the property when he brings her lunch to her - unless he is on 'official' business... when he is off duty - he is not allowed to carry a weapon onto the property..... I thanked her for 'respectfully' explaining the situation to me, turned around, and drove back home.... I went back the next day without my weapon, and was greeted by the guard with, "Did you leave your weapon at home?" I told him yes, and with that - I was allowed into the parking lot for my visit...... Sooooo, just a heads-up for anyone who may find themselves wondering about legally carrying your weapon to the Hutchin's Unit located just south of Dallas - leave it at home, or you won't get in...... I might add that the sign was not an official '30.06' sign we are accustomed to seeing - it is a large - maybe 8'x8' wooden sign that you can't miss upon pulling into the driveway... Just thought someone here might like to know about this update.... :txflag:

He was carrying his pistol in his boot.Well he did not want to tell the cop about his concealed handgun as he knew he was already in trouble.
He spent the night in jail, saw the JP next morning. paid fine and left, with handgun still in boot.He got lucky i guess.
That was one LUCKY hombre!

I recently had occasion to visit the Gorey unit in Huntsville. A Captain told me that weapons had to be under 2 locks. I pointed out to him that the TDCJ visitors guide said unloaded, secured in the trunk. He said 'the legislation has changed', and that their guide hasn't be updated. Luckily the glove box in my mom's car locks, or I'd have been waiting in the parking lot.

I just love how they make up rules and change the law to suit their own ideas.
