I heard (second hand) that a zoo is a school...and a city is not a governmental entity. This apparently from attorneys licensed to practice in Texas.

Yes, I think he mentioned that he was an MP during part of his service.

I heard this from a friend this weekend when going into a restaurant. "It is not legal to carry anywhere that alcohol is served or sold in Texas!"

He then pointed to the unlicensed possession sign as his proof. I pulled out my CHL and showed him I was licensed. After a bit more conversations I also explained it is not illegal to carry in churches or within 1 mile of a school.

The good news, now he knows the real skinny on where you can carry and asked where he can take the CHL class. He just thought the rules as he knew them were too restrictive. He looked like this when he realized how misinformed he was.

This was back when I was an Epidemiologist with the a Health Dept. I had access to databases and when studies would come out using databases that I had access to I could double check the statistics.

When you see gun related death the older studies (and many new ones) will lump accidental, intentional, and self inflicted wounds. You have to read the structure of the study to tease this out.

Nationwide the rate of mortality in a gun related incident (non suicide) is 3 in 1,000,000. While Suicide with a firearm is 58 per 1,000,000. You can see how suicide drowns out if it is not removed.

All of this is available online through the CDC using WONDER.

When you qualify at the range, make sure you miss the target a few times. That way you'll have an excuse for shooting center mass because you aren't a perfect shot.

The Rick Perry coyote-shooting incident was being discussed.

A 39 year old California native woman remarked "He used a hollow
point bullet!", implying that she felt this was wrong.

Myself and a young man whose dad is a SWAT-training LEO told

Before it was legal to carry in your vehicle I used to always hear that it was ok as long as you display it on the dash so it was in plain sight. In other words not concealed.

I was told (in a group setting) by someone who considered themselves "in the know" that you weren't allowed to carry in a church. A girl remarked "why would you carry a gun in church anyway?!"

I didn't even bother to get involved in the discussion, just sat there 2 feet away from the idiot and the naive girl with a 1911 on my waist and smiled.

I normally feel the compulsion to educate those who are ill-informed, but sometimes you can tell you're not going to get through and don't even bother....

A person I worked with described, in excruciating detail, how he made his bullets more effective when he was in the service, by filing the noses down, scooping some of the lead out, and filing grooves in the sides. I will give him credit for knowing the FMJ means the M is only a J and there is lead underneath, but when I pointed out that A) he would be considered a war criminal if caught and B) he was destroying the balance and concentricity of the rounds, he went into further detail about how careful he was to make the modifications so that they didn't effect accuracy, and that he wasn't likely to get caught because the bullets were going to break up. At that point I gave up.

BTW, the first time we re-qualified, my wife didn't need to have her target scored or pass/fail, it was obvious that she had put every round in the right place - they presented the target to her with due ceremony and she still has it.

Friend just bought his first gun and he told me his plan for keeping it in his car, "I'll keep the gun here (pocket behind passenger chair) and my magazine in the center console".

I asked him why he wouldn't just have it locked and loaded and he said that when the situation escalated he would have time to load it up.
