Glad to hear you are okay. Thanks to liberal judges and sleazy lawyers, there are more felons walking around our neighborhoods than ever before. This scrote had already spent 12 years in jail for the same type of offense. What do you think these guys are doing in jail? They are lifting weights, getting stronger and angrier at society. They are not being rehabilitated. It's sad we can't treat everybody like neighbors anymore, but it is what it is. Arm yourselves and be prepared to pull the trigger when the moment of truth arrives.

glad you are ok. we visit the island several times a year. i was born and raised in houston living in carrollton now. but we spent every weekend and holiday on the island when i was young. i absolutly love it. the wife and i were there over memorial day weekend. i will say there are some sketchy folks out and about, more than once i glad i was carrying. east beach around sundown, and the seawall well past midnight. i am usally left alone by strangers as i am a relativly ugly gent, (you know the old saying. dont fight ugly people, we got nothing to lose) :) if ever i were to be "approached" while with any members of my family i would rather draw too soon, and deal with possible repercussions, than some get the drop on me leave my family to the ill-will of these dirtbags.
god bless.

Glad you were not hurt. I would suggest you consider carrying now, and planning for training. In the situation you describe, things could have gone worse had you not been able to flee. Giving him your money apparently did not end the situation. Producing a loaded firearm might have.
I live in an essentially "no crime" neighborhood, if there is such a thing.
Even so, I always carry at home, especially outdoors. Usually it's a NAA Black Widow revolver in .22mag, or Seecamp .32 ACP.

Same here. There's no reason not to at least carry something as non-obstrusive as that.
Besides, "no crime neighborhoods" like ours are that way until they're not. Just ask the Polanski Family above Beverly Hills, or the Clutter Family in Holcomb, Kansas.

Probably the biggest known hazard in our neighborhood are roaming dogs. The two pit bulls in the yard behind mine have been know to get out and kill livestock a block away. I've not seen those in my yard, but I have looked out the window to see large dogs cross our property. I have no illusions about .22 mag stopping a charging pit bull, BTW.

The suspect in this case was denied bail.
After spending 12 years in the slammer, he was out on bail after being charged with armed robbery in May, when he was charged with two more armed robberies.

Do you mean the suspect or the courts?

Neither have I. If I knew I had pit bulls/other large dogs around, I'd pack my .357 . The mini-revolver fits my notion of minimum (but ever-present) protection for extremely unlikely events. Admittedly not for stopping power. They've been aptly referred to elsewhere as a "nasal inhalant from hell."

Usually presenting a small pistol like a seacamp or darringer is not for stopping power but persuading power. A dog cannot identify the threat of any handgun no matter what the size. A human on the other hand can. No one WANTS to get shot so most people will avoid a situation or change direction no matter what the size of a pistol being waved in their face.

Even small guns look huge when you're on the wrong end of one.
