When I first started to carry I really weighed this method. Was shopping for the packs and what would be best for me.

I then went and got some real training and decided after several force on force scenerios that my prefered and best method For ME is to keep the firearm "on body".

Have carried that way ever since.

Fanny packing is a good option for some people...I'm glad it works for you.

I use a fanny pack when I go to the gym, or grocery store. I don't really care if it is a fashion blunder or not. It is comfortable, and allows me to carry when I would not be able to do so otherwise.

Well I've been using it consistently for over a week now and I'm hooked. I've wearing my Bersa 9 and an extra magazine in places where I used to only carry my LCP. This method is no more indirect carry than any OWB holster (its a gun in a pouch strapped to your body). I get so annoyed with the argument: "What if someone tries to take your gun because they know you have a gun?" By that logic, cops and Loomis drivers should never carry a weapon, and certainly not in a holster strapped to their body, because it's right in plain sight for someone to just grab it.

And drawing is not any slower than IWB with a little practice. It's just a matter of knowing where the zipper handle is (I cut the tassel off of one of the zippers so my hand only needs to find one); me and my wife call it "zip it and dip it" drills. For us, it's the closest thing to legal open carry. Still, I'm looking for the perfect top loading design with a heavy magnet latch and a back-up "click" buckle (kinda' like a camera bag, except with a magnet also).

You really should take a look at the Galco fanny pack. There are two zippers on the compartment and a tpa (that looks just like a zipper pull) that is part of the outer flap. You just zip both zippers closed to the corner wher the tab is. A swift pull on the tab pulls the from flap open, unzipping both zippers at the same time. It's much quicker than trying to actually unzip a zipper. The holster part is actually a neoprene backing built into the pack with an elastic and velcro strap to aid retention (although it's not really needed). The way it fits my Kahr K40, I can draw the gun without even having to undo the strap. There's also provisions for a spare mag. (Sorry for the fuzzy pics. They were taken in a mirror and the camera had a bit of trouble.) I think that if you're going to carry in a fanny pack, the best way to go is to get one that is actually made for that purpose.

My wife and I purchased fanny packs recently and I would have to say that we are in agreement. The fanny pack, although at times rightfully not considered stylish, is quite functional and easy to use. I carry a S&W Model 581 and my wife carries a STI Ranger II. Both are not small framed guns and can be carried easily in a fanny pack.

Why are they called fanny packs when you don't wear them on your fanny?

I have one that I take on the road. I drape it over the truck seat. It holds a flashlight, change, roll-aids, other stuff. The Kimber is on the hip, the K-T is in the pocket, the S&W is in the console, and the Winchester pump is on the floor behind the seat.

Wear/use what works for you. If you are not able to carry comfortably then you may not carry...and that defeats the purpose of a CHL.

I have a carry-specific fanny pack that I originally started carrying (back in '96) my Glock 17 in. I didn't have any "good" holsters then like I do now. Every now and then I'll use a fanny pack when on a long car trip, especially when I'm wearing gym shorts and a thin t-shirt. It's great that the gun is readily accessible and essentially in plain sight. I pocket carry in gym shorts around the house, but there's NO way that I'd do it while out and about...it prints big time, even with my pocket .38 revolver. That's where the fanny pack is great, for me.

Criminals are more likely to think you are a tourist with money in there, not a gun.

My fanny pack is worn on the fanny and holds a bottle of water on each side and a folded-up poncho zipped-up in between. The gun is OWB unconcealed. Oh- I forgot, that's in Colorado, where it's really O.K. to carry a weapon.

When I carry at night, I like to get TLR-2 out mounted on my P30. The best way to carry is using tommy's f-pack. As bonus, I can carry 2 extra 15-rds mags with my wallet!

My next upgrade is to get a C5L on PX4SC, carried in a smartcarry!

Snatching happens when something is detached from one's body, not firmly strapped on. It could happen, but a really awkward, inconvenient tussle would ensue without any guarantee of success on the robbers part. Now about the suggestion to open carry because it's legal in Colorado; did you mean to post that on COCHL instead of TXCHL?

No, just my usual jab that I enjoy the freedom of open carry in the wilderness areas of states that allow open carry. Can't do that when I am in Texas, unless something has changed that I have not heard about. I don't open carry in towns for the reasons we have covered in several threads on the subject.
