I want to go on the record that I disagree with anyone who takes offense to this. As a devoted and LOYAL follower of our dear leader and all of the benevolent governmental entities that take care of us, I am deeply concerned by some of the opinions expressed in this thread and elsewhere.

The government is our mother, father and protector. Our dear leader would never allow any harm to befall us and will always act in our best interests.

Does anyone know where I can find a big "I love my federal government" sign for my yard? Wouldn't want any of my neighbors to get the wrong idea.

That doesn't have anything to do with it. You don't see it discussed often, given the mythology of the "French Resistance," but the Gestapo couldn't keep up with all the French informers turning in neighbors and relatives for revenge, and slights real, or imagined. Looks like that is coming here.

When I was a younger man some odd years ago, I spent some time in Air Force Special Operations Command...my squadron commander was a Lt. Col. He was was a great pilot and excellent guy to work for, took care of us maintenance folks as well as he did the aircrew. He always used to tell us, "It ain't paranoia if they really are out to get you". And of course, some of them are...the point of compiling information is that WHEN you become someone on their "bad boy" list, they already have the data necessary to prove whatever it is they want to prove. Stalin's NKVD (the precursor to the KGB) were masters of this stuff...same goes for the Gestapo, as well. I'm neither a hero nor a genius, just a mechanic who reads and keeps his eyes open. (And no, I don't care about any Bilderberg meetings, Illuminati, or space aliens...I just worry about certain folks who think they are better at knowing how we should all live our lives.) Okay, I'm off the soapbox.

According to an article in the Washington Post, the FBI is in the process of amassing a database of detailed background information on American citizens who are not directly suspected of any crime but who come to the agency's attention based on "suspicions" of law enforcement officers or "neighbors." Pages 3 and 4 of the Post article describe this new program in some detail. It also describes other surveillance and intelligence programs you may not have been aware of before.

History repeats itself. The FBI starting collection this type of information on people of German, Italian and Japanese descent at the beginning of World War II. After World War II it was people who might be or associated with communists.

What was that guy's name...? It's coming to me now, does the name Joe McCarthy ring any bells? I think he was a Republican from Wisconsin?

Exactly what I was thinking. McCarthyism, bring on the blacklists.

J. Edgar Hoover, daddy of the FBI, under several administrations, had all sorts of lists of "suspects" 60-70 years ago.
