I agree.
We use a nano vault also.
We've had our Suburban broken into twice. Once our son left some electronics out in view, and another time there was a computer bag in the back. Both times, the lock was punched out with a screwdriver. Both times, they grabbed the major item, and anything loose, like CDs and even our floor mats, but many valuables were overlooked. Nano Vault wasn't there the first time (2005) but the 2nd break-in (2009) it wasn't touched.
(Gringos restaurant in Stafford 2005 and Razzoos in Stafford 2009, by the way. Lunch time, broad daylight, both incidents. That Southwest Freeway restaurant corridor is awful, and the landlords don't seem to care. After the 2009 break-in, we took our car to the insurance approved body shop, and he had FOUR insurance jobs for break-ins, various makes & models, all from the same general area on the same afternoon)

So I opened the nano last night and WHOA.! What a stink coming off the foam inside.!
I left it outside overnight and it still stinks.
I'm wondering whether the chemicals coming off that foam might affect the cartridges/primers if exposed long enough??
Might just need to find some replacement foam and cut my own inserts.. That stink is terrible.
Hopefully it'll be gone in a few days.

I had to run the foam, by itself, through two cycles in the washing machine to get rid of the smell.
Good Luck!

It's a really strong chemical "solvent" type of a smell..
Something heavy that didn't dissipate much after spending the last 15 hours outside.
I'm hesitant to wash the foam, for fear of ruining it...
I suppose if I washed it and trashed it, I could just replace the foam.
The case itself is worth the price I paid for it... I just didn't expect the hassle.
EDIT: So I stopped by the house at lunch today.. (lucky me)
I hand washed the foam pieces using Tide, then finished with a bit of liquid fabric softener.
Not only is the bad smell gone from the foam, but my hands smell pretty nice too.
Seriously... looks like the smell was successfully washed away and I feel ok about storing cartridges in the box now. The pads are drying in the breeze on the back porch... I'll post again if my opinion changes, but, I think all will be ok.

That's odd. mine didnt have any strong smells when I bought it. It did have a smell to it, like most new things (even my gun safe had that "new" smell), but it wasnt overpowering or even strong to the point that it caused me any concern.

This was WAY beyond anything you could call "normal" new stuff smell...
Stinks from 10 feet away, headache-inducing...
Seems fixed now..

I'm surprised by how affordably priced these things are...
2 medium boxes for $60 including shipping.
"Meets TSA guidelines for transporting your weapon in your checked luggage when flying."
A few questions for owners of these....
1. Are they sturdy? 20 Ga steel is not so thick (.0359 inches / 0.91mm).
2. Which would be easier to pry open.... your locked glove box or this safe?
3. How about the finish? Standard powder coated or "rhino" type coating? How well has the finish held up over use/time/getting knocked around the car/truck?
4. Overall quality? Lock opens and closes easily and securely?, cover closes easily with no gaps?, cable fits securely and easily onto safe?, etc?
I've seen a similar car safe at a gun show, but it was made from much sturdier steel with rhino liner finish... Nice. But much higher cost. ($75/each IIRC)... If these are well made, I'm ok saving the $$... but would love to hear some feedback from current users.
Thanks.!
Works for me.
Wouldn't stand up if the thief had plenty of time and the proper tools, but its about slowing them way down.
