Seriously, the rodeo is gonna be considered a professional sporting event. NASCAR is. NFL, NBA, NHL, etc. are. There are the questionable ones like Monster Trucks, Roller Derby, Professional Tiddlywinks competitions, etc., but they until there is case law, if it walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck.....

so from everything i've seen, it sounds like it's legal to carry at the livestock show, is that correct? my cousin is coming down to show her steer and we plan on stopping by to spend some time with them. my wife also likes to go and browse all the vendor booths, is it legal to carry inside there too? it's been a few years since we've been to the livestock show/rodeo so i don't remember exactly which buildings each event were held at.

The last time I went to the Livestock show portion, has been a number of years, and the livestock show, I believe, was around or even inside the Astrodome, while the Rodeo/Concert was in Reliant Stadium.
If this is still the case, or even if the Livestock show is inside Reliant Park (not the stadium portion through the ticket scanners), then yes, you are legal to carry.
You can also carry at the carnival, however, I would be leery of any rides that may dislocate your weapon

IIRC, when we went 2 years ago the livestock show and vendor booths were set up in Reliant Center.. at least i think that's what the building is called, it's on the Fannin Street side (where they had the recent HGCA gun show). we may even be going there this weekend, i'll keep an eye out for any 30.06 postings if we do.

and no carnival rides for me. if Oakridge Smokehouse is there again, there's no way i'm risking vomiting up their BBQ.

I haven't met an amusement park ride yet with enough negative Gs.

Just to put this issue to bed, I'm on one of the rodeo committees and have spent quite a bit of time at the HLSR. When working my committee, I am legal to carry unless I work on the portion of the committee that takes the rodeo contestants inside the stadium. There are no 30.06 signs anywhere. Unless you go inside the ticket scanners, through the rodeo contestant entrance, into the hideout or any other club on the grounds, your good to go.

I have discussed this with both HPD and Harris County officers (they visit our area often because we always have food/donuts/coffee/ice cream there ), and you are good to go at the livestock show, carnival, and vendor booths. There may be a sticky issue at the horse arena, the cutting horses have a pro class that some over ambitious DA could call a professional sporting event.

FYI...
There is a bill in the Texas Legislature that would put professional sporting events in the same category as churches and hospitals... they would have to post a 30.06 sign to prohibit concealed carry. And I'm not sure that Reliant could even post a 30.06 sign, since it is publicly owned.

I would agree, but only as far as to agree that Pasadena Convention Center, George R Brown, etc, are all posted 30.06 during Gun Shows, and are publicly owned.... legal? No, do i want to be the test case? No.

The change requiring "effective notice" is in the campus carry bill, and puts ALL sporting events (scholastic, collegiate, and professional) in the same category as churches, hospitals, and amusement parks.

Good catch! I hadn't noticed that. HB 750 would require §30.06 notice at all the sporting events that are currently off limits, although SB 354 wouldn't (would only require notice for college sporting events to ban carry).
