First of all, welcome to the forum, and please take what I write next as constructive criticism and not as an attack directed at you personally.........
You have just learned a common but painful lesson; and that lesson is to refrain at all possible costs from educating someone unsympathetic to carrying that you intend to carry into their establishment—particularly when that establishment has communicated a no guns policy but does not have a valid 30.06 sign posted. The very LAST person you would have wanted to contact was anyone employed by Taste of Dallas, for the very reason that you risk receiving an unwanted notification. The law may be very specifically written as to what constitutes written notification, but this one of those things where if you are identified as carrying AND also as having been previously given written notice (even if that notice doesn't rise to the definitions in the law), and the cops are called, you probably won't beat the ride. The lawyer is going to get you off, but at a very stiff price. The reason you won't beat the ride is that the folks at Taste of Dallas are demonstrably ignorant, and that ignorance will make them call the cops, when they could have simply ask you to leave.
Worse yet, you may have put a bug into their heads that they need to examine their wording and be more specific.....even
legal. Don't be surprised if they do post a valid 30.06 sign down the road because they have been inadvertently goaded into doing their homework.
The next time you have a question like this, you should ask it to a friendly audience, like an online CHL forum (I think there's one around here somewhere....), to find out if anybody knows what the deal is
before you go and step in it. But, don't feel too bad about it. It's a mistake that is easy to make for the uninitiated. We just need to be crazy like foxes to overcome the prejudices that some folks have.
Also, check out
http://www.texas3006.com, a website written by one of our members. They keep a database of all know sign postings, but it is dependent on reader contributions. So if you see a "no guns" sign (30.06 compliant or not) that isn't listed there, join and post it for the benefit of the other members.
And again, welcome to this forum. It's a pretty good place to hang out, and I think it has the best concentration of knowledge about CHL in Texas anywhere on the web.
