But, I was sure it was a fraud the first time I read it. One way you can usually tell a fraud is that the terminology used is not correct. Look for bad spelling or bad grammar or someone using the wrong terms. In Texas, we do not have the Chief of Police of the County in most cases. Also, it refers to San Antonio, not Bexar County. While the wrong terminology is not a sure thing, I assumed it was not written by anyone familiar with the US, especially not Texas. I might be wrong, but it gave me a working hypothesis to use.
...the original post also mentioned wheels...if bad spelling or bad grammar or someone using the wrong terms (...or improper punctuation...)is an evidence of fraud...you've just convicted about half of us here...someone in Denver wouldn't know our LEO titles, like someone from Wyoming wouldn't know what a parish was in LA...and it "refers to San Antonio" because the event they're referring to HAPPENED in San Antonio...elementary, my dear Watson...
...searching brought up two people at two different forums who personally knew someone who'd had it happened to them...neither the HGCA who put out the warning NOR the Gunsite instructor who verified it had any motive but to help protect the shooting community...the lady pbwalker dug up seemed to be taking a ride on it for business reasons...so it wasn't a fraud, though it might have been exaggerated...I haven't got time to research theft reports from SAPD during that time frame...maybe someone else wants to...those who want to can pick the carcass...it's dead now...

...got an email back from Royce Graff, the National Shooting Complex Director and called him...very helpful and friendly...he remembers the event referenced...his security people did get calls from some participants, he and his security went out and investigated them, and found that they ranged from manufacturer's marks to tire company marks...and they had very few thefts during the event...no more than any other business might have and nowhere near the epidemic that the warning spoke of...he had seen the same warning before this round of postings, and had a Federal agency person bring it up to him last week...they'd gotten the same warning and he told them the same thing...so it's proven out to be a molehill instead of a mountain...totally exaggerated and blown out of proportions by well-meaning people who were just trying to help...Royce was very helpful and glad to get the word out about it...

....We have read that because gun thefts from vehicles are so “rampant” in San Antonio that a police chief met with the 400 shooters at that event to warn them about the problem. That did not happen. ....

...OK...you're the first one who had any knowledge from that end of it...that's the ones who hosted the event...that solves that part of it...so we've been to who preached it, who amened it, where it didn't happen that way, and now the host of the party...anyone else wanna drive a nail in the coffin??? Long live the Internet...

Just a thought....
Meter Maids and other parking enforcement officers will often use a chalk mark placed on a tire sidewall to determine if a car has been moved or not from its parking space since the last time they drove past it.........and marked it.

...no, I'm not mad...even though you had to take one more cheap shot at me...I posted the OP in good faith, then put out an extended effort to research it and check it out from every angle to find out the truth from the names involved and posted what I found...making sure we all here got as much of the truth of the matter as I could find...that's all I can do...it's been talked to death and there's no reason to leave it open...unless to give some folks a place to crow...some folks need that, it seems...

No need to lock it. I get all kinds of things across the Interweb like this. Hoaxes are out there, and they are made to look real and hook people. I think everyone has been caught at one time or another with believing one.
Bottom line, since it is still floating around and another member posted it today in another topic, I think we need to leave it open and play civil in your posts.

Rules to follow to avoid being duped by these sorts of hoaxes:
1. If it's a repost to Facebook, it's likely a hoax.
2. If you received it as a forwarded email, it's likely a hoax.
3. If one cannot substantiate the claim by providing a link to a legitimate source, it is likely a hoax. And bloggers are too unreliable...their own biases and lack of fact checking leave them as some of the most notorious creators/perpetuators of hoaxes.
4. If it seems too odd, too crazy, or plays on our own fears/biases, make the effort to validate. Snopes.com is you best first stop.
