Whadda' ya think, he would have shot you?
I wondered about that back on page 1, but either no one noticed it or wanted to pose a possible outcome to that question to the officer.

I don't think the OP over reacted at all. The logical, analytical, and reserved part of my brain says that "As long as its a modern firearm in good repair carried inside of a quality holster the everything will be alright. The safety side of my brain says: "We have four rules of gun safety. As long as you follow just one of them you will never kill anyone neglegently. However when you break one rule the possibility of breaking the others goes up as does the chance of something bad happening." Then the Logical and analytical portion says: "Your right and how do we know the pistol is in good repair and the holster is a quality rig?" The safety side then says:" Yes, also what if he feels the need to draw the weapon? Will his finger be on the trigger as soon as he can get it there?" Then the Logical/Analytical portion says "If that happens do you know that thing is pointed?" and the safety side replies with "Exactly."

LEOs tend to be poorly trained in regards to firearms, and "familiarity breeds complacency" so they tend to get complacent around firearms. I have seen on duty officers remove their weapon from their holster, aim it at another officer and point to a spot on the firearm while their finger is on the trigger and say "I think thats rust, what do you think I should do about it?" I nearly got into a shouting match at a gun store with an officer who thought it was funny to point a pistol he was checking out at the clerk so he could see the factory laser in action, and he is a gun guy.

You're more likely to be struck by lightning.

I have a simple rule:

Do whatever I have to in order to avoid having the end of a gun with the hole in it pointed at me.

No discussion. No exceptions. Period.

Relying on guesses about a gun's mechanical condition, cocked status, holster performance, or owner's skill to make me feel better about an obvious risk of perforation by allowing a violation of Rule 2 is just not for me.

YMMV.

Thanks for the responses. Let me say, however, that my questions were....as you figured out, rhetorical in nature.

I moved, and would move again. I didn't take the opportunity to observe whether or not the hammer was down, or quiz the officer on his training or if the pistol had one in the pipe. I simply didn't like a barrel pointing at me from 7' away.

GigAg, you're prolly right....better odds of getting struck by lighting. But, I don't stay on golf courses when it storms either.

OlGringo, I didn't feel the need to point out to the officer that his gun was pointing it at me. First, the place was packed, and second....he knew...he puts that rig on every day. It's why I don't own one myself.

And, guys, what makes me the most upset with all your comments the most, is the one from Johnson0317: Let me make it clear, I DID NOT THROW AWAY GOOD BBQ!!! I had finished my meal, thank you very much..... "rlol" "rlol" "rlol" "rlol"

I have not been chased off a golf course by rain after I had already started. Yet.

If you are really concerned about a holstered gun "just going off" why would you walk around with a holstered gun in your pants all day?

I can understand the concerns over getting swept on a draw from a shoulder holster, but this seems an awful lot like refusing to walk through a parking lot because the parked cars might run you over.

:iagree: I've moved under a similar situation (Mexican restaurant instead of BBQ).

I too, would have felt uncomfortable. I also would have politely and respectfully asked him to please make some adjustment in his seating or position as I am not comfortable with ANYONE'S gun pointed directly at my body. I bet he would have shifted to accommodate if he is a good person/police officer. Any rational minded person would understand. I don't want any gun pointed at my body, cocked and locked, unloaded, or otherwise.

Holy crap you're right. I can't even think of a half decent counter argument. Making people comfortable with guns around seems doable. They never mind when it's a LEO, but guys in shoulder rigs with the boom end pointing at the fellow behind them is going to be hard to explain away.

For those of you who have said it would make you uncomfortable, do you ever carry in a pocket holster?

Would you be uncomfortable sitting across the table from someone carrying in a pocket holster?

Why or why not?
