you know, it's funny, more to the point here, I don't stockpile ammo.
I usually keep a magful in each gun, and right now I have a couple boxes of some GoldDots cause I haven't tried them out, yet.
I have just a bit of range ammo left over from the last time I went, but not much.
do a lot of you just buy a box or two here and there, or are ya'll buying in bulk?
I'm just curious, cause I'm new to the shooting thing. for the most part, I buy range ammo the day before, then go, shoot up all my bullets, then go home.

You never know when the range bug is gonna come over you, so you gotta keep a little bit of ammo on hand.

You know, say, 5, 6, 10,000 rounds or so...

For practice ammo, I buy them in bulk. 1 case is my minimum order, usually 2-3 cases. When I had many different calibers, I maintain at least 5-10 boxes per caliber so that I can take any gun to the range at any time.

I've recently changed my range trip routine. I used to go often and shoot about 50-100 rounds per trip; now I go less and shoot more rounds per trip. This also means even more stockpiles of ammo per caliber. Luckily, I only have 4 calibers now, but maintain 1000+ rounds per caliber.

Edit to add:
casselthief, I'd rather buy ammo like you, i.e. buying what I need on range day. But Walmart ammo buying experience is terrible and there's a good chance they don't have anything I need in stock; plus the time needed to stop there. Of course, buying at the range is a bit too expensive for the minor convenience. Also, some match grade ammo are only available over the net, and shipping small quantities is relatively expensive. I think once you try stocking up by the cases, you'll realize an immediate savings of time and money.

I tend to buy ammo when the price is right, so I buy in thousand round cases. I save money in the long run that way.

The exception for me is 308 and 45. Those I haven't bought loaded ammo for in a long time since I reload them and have plenty of brass on hand.
For the 45's, since a range session will typically be 150-250 rounds I usually keep a few thousand loaded and ready to go.

I like to keep things simple. I have a 45ACP and a 308Win.

In the future I will add .223/5.56, and either a 9mm or .40(but not both).

cool, thanx guys.
I guess I really AM lucky. there's this guy that works the "gun" counter at my WalMart (Lewisville). he is a GUN GUY. he's young (so ya'll wouldn't like'em  ), but he's very knowledgable, very courteous, and very professional. I've never had a hard time getting range ammo (white box o' 9milly), and their prices are good.
I will, however, expand my horizons a bit. thx again, all.

j1132s, I'm sure my wife would like to see me infected with whatever got ahold of you!

I feel about guns the way Richard King, founder of the King Ranch, felt about land. His motto was "buy land, buy land, buy land, and never, never sell."

22LR
32
357 Sig
38
9 mm
40 S&W
45 Colt

If I had the budget, I'd really like to add something that eats 45 ACP.
