In 1964 there were very few Republicans in the South. And the 1964 Civil Rights Act could not have passed without support from a lot of Republicans. Your history is suspect.

This is correct. But after the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, the great realignment of the parties began. Most of the pre-1964 Democrats are Republicans today, and most of the liberal and moderate Northeastern and Western pre-1964 Republicans are Democrats today. Those Republicans who supported the 1964 CR Act are the Northeastern and Western Democrats of today.

I came from a Republican area in Michigan. It is still Republican and almost everyone I know who was in a Republican family in 1964 is still a Republican. No offence but your statements about northern Republicans are as much hogwash as the statements about southern Republicans.

The Democratic party was racist before 1964 and its policies are effectively racist today although dressed up in "good intentions", just like gun control is supposedly all about reducing violence. Abortion is a holocaust in the Black community. Housing projects helped destroy black communities. Welfare has helped destroy black families. Schools in urban areas run by Democrats have flunked generations of black students. And Obama's own economic policies have created or extended enormous rates of unemployment in the black community, particularly among young males. I call that real racism.

The correct term is "Plantation Politics." "We know what's best for you. You stay here on the plantation. We will give you free food, and money, and education."

BTW my congressman in 1964 was Gerald Ford. He voted for and as a leader of Republicans in the House helped pass the Civil Rights Act of 1964. His old District is still represented by a Republican.

People often affiliate themselves with political parties based upon their parents' preferences. In the mean time, things change, but they still affiliate with the name.
