I seem to recall my Vet saying that it is important to test for heartworms annually, because giving the treatment when the worms were already present was very dangerous. At least that's what they said before they would renew the prescription last time. Don't remember ever having to do this before.

your dog can go a whole lifetime and never get heartworm or be the one that does... what you have to tell yourself is what is your dog worth to you and do you care enough to make him/her safe.... after that the answers are easy. For the price of a pizza and a beer you will never have to go through the heart break of heartworm.

Now you can fill your pet persctiptions at your local Wal-Mart pharmacy. Just saw the sign yesterday.

When my dog tested positive the vet said I can treat or just continue the heart worm preventative since it is a mild case. I chose the later and on his next annual visit he was heart worm free.

We have a rescue Great Pyr who had heartworms. It cost us around $500 to treat her. Heartguard is a must - although the DE sounds interesting enough to explore.

My dogs (actually my wife's dogs and my dog) have a room to themselves and a doggie door and go out and in at will. All of them get heartworm tests yearly and preventive treatments.

DE is great for fleas and other bugs, but won't do anything for heart worms or tapeworms. Heart worm treatment is still necessary. I don't know what the deal with tapeworms is. You can't even treat them with the same dewormers that is used for nearly everything else. That is a separate medication.
