Tube amp is the only way to play vinyl

I've got a Harmon-Kardon amp stuffed away in a box somewhere. The turntable got damaged in a garage roof leak incident years back.

You guy's have made me feel nostalgic. Now I've got to go dig through boxes, find it and the stacks of vinyl and borrow a turntable==


I've also got an old 1930's cabinet victrola in the den and a stack of discs for it. I'll "crank it up" now and then for a good polka or waltz.

It's hard to beat the cracks and pops of the record while spinning up a jazz or big band album. I'm convinced I was born in the wrong time.

I have thousands of vinyl albums and 45s. In addition to the music they contain, the album art is something that is now long gone in our digital age. The cover art contained on CDs is no comparison to real album art. Remember buying a double LP and opening the cover to find everything from the complete lyrics, to posters, to--in one instance--a big rolling paper? Did your girlfriend get oogle eyed when opening the Frampton Comes Alive album cover? Do you remember which band member's feet never touched the ground on Abby Road? There are still people today trying to sell the copy of the Who's Woodstock contract that was included in one of their albums. You may refer to all the additional goodies contained in albums as a gimmick, however, for me, it was always a bonus as I would have more than likely purchased the album without it. 45s had their own charm. How many of us discovered a track on the B Side that we liked more than headlined A Side?

The digital age has brought us a way to catalog, file, and listen to our music in an easier fashion. However, IMO, the price has been the quality of the recording and quite a large portion of the other great artistic properties that albums contained.

I still have my Yamaha receiver , Klipsch Heresy speakers, and Bang & Olefsen turntable but I've just become too lazy. CDs are so much easier, and they sound better.

Carlos and Leo, my oh my you have eclectic tastes. I have never seen Leo live, but my brother has and is a big fan. I'm pretty sure I saw Santana, but can't remember the venue. The cover art was indeed worth the album price at times. I bought a brand new sealed Led Zeppelin III way back when it came out and I put it on the turntable....... all I heard was Engelbert Humperdinck. I looked around at all my friends and asked them if they were hearing Engelbert, too. They were. Album labels were correct on both sides as were the liner and cover. I took it back and got a new album. Later I wished I had kept it.

I like all kinds of music. A friend introduced me to Leo Kottke back in the 60s. I got to see him at the Flint Center in Cupertino in the mid 80s. I saw Santana at the Santa Clara fairgrounds during their hayday.

Well, I found a record store on the west side of Ft. Worth...picked up The Rolling Stones' "Hot Rocks"...cover is a little beat up, but it SOUNDS good!

I have every vinyl album I ever bought, except for the one's my brother "borrowed". And he "borrowed" my original "Rubber Soul"! I also have a turntable....I'm thinking this weekend, I'm spinning...

Just a little tidbit I read:

The vinyl records renaissance is not just anecdotal. U.S. vinyl album sales reached 3.9 million units in 2011, according to Nielsen SoundScan -- that’s nearly a 40% gain over the prior year, and the most vinyl sales registered in the two decades the company has been collecting the data.
Still, it is well below the vinyl sales peak back in the disco era.

The Recording Industry Association of America reports a record 344 million LPs and EPs were sold in 1977 -- the centennial celebration of Thomas Edison’s invention of the phonograph. The recordings had tracked from “Mary had a little lamb” to the “Saturday Night Fever” double album soundtrack, and the ubiquitous platters were spinning in every club and virtually every home.

I've always liked vinyl, since childhood. I have a good-sounding system and a pretty good collection of LPs. I record my favorites to high-resolution WAV files, in case something should happen to the vinyl.

This is my all time favorite jazz album. Dave Brubeck Quartet "Time Out" was released in 1959 and is still in print.
