I have an M21 too and carry it when I need a heavier knife like when I plan to go off the beaten path on a hike. It's a bit too big and heavy for daily carry in the office, but a terrific tool one can count on.74novaman wrote:I agree with TAM. I love my CRKT M21.
I even put it through the washing machine and dryer once with no rusting or damage. (thought not intentionally)

Sure, it's basically just a sharpened piece of metalBugler wrote:Will you trust your life to a $100 knife?AdioSS wrote:What's your price range?

I've got plenty of other knives now that would be much more effective as a defensive weapon. The Cold Steel Rajah II & Large G10 Espada are both ~$100 knives that I would feel more than comfortable with in a defensive role.
When I received that as a Christmas bonus last year, it was the most expensive knife I owned. I've carried pocket knives pretty much every day ever since I got my Whittling Chip Card in Cub Scouts. I usually carry multiple blades on me whenever I'm out.
The Kershaw Leek (half serrated) was my favorite for a long time. I just wish the handles weren't so slick on them. Since I liked that basic design, I picked up a used Zero Tolerance 0301. It is a heck of a knife that can be used for just about anything. Sure, it's a little bulky, but I still wear it a lot. That DLC tigerstripe coated S30V steel is nice

But if I felt seriously threatened the first knife I would reach for is a cheap Buck Diamondback that I carry weak side on my belt ahead of my flashlight & spare magazine. I tried a Ka-Bar TDI knife there, but it just wasn't comfortable. The sheath used by the Buck is hard plastic around the blade, but attaches to the belt with a nylon strap & velcro. I tuck the plastic into my back pocket & the nylon lets the fixed blade move with me instead of getting caught on stuff when I sit & get in & out of vehicles. Like I said though, it is a relatively inexpensive knife made in Taiwan. But the thin blade has a good profile & is very sharp. The handle is very comfortable. The design of the sheath holds it secure, but it deploys very quickly & easily. Sure, the thin cheap steel could break off or chip, but I've had it for a very long time & it is still perfect.

I used to carry around this: http://www.gerbergear.com/Tactical/Kniv ... e_22-41432
A very reliable knife in my opinion
But I just got this: http://www.gerbergear.com/Military/Kniv ... e_22-01055
I haven't carried it yet because I had to send it back, the serrations were done improperly (at an angle, not in line with the blade). However contrary to what the picture makes it look like, it's a huge knife. You won't have any problems deploying it wearing gloves.

I am really trying to carry a knife. I already carry wallet, keys, phone, two pistols, and a spare magazine. I feel loaded down and sometimes the clip on the knife just does not want to open enough to clip over my pants. My belt is a gun belt so it is to thick for it to fit over the belt.

That load out might be a bit more bearable for routine carry without the second pistol.carlson1 wrote:I am really trying to carry a knife. The knife clip will alter its tension slightly as you wear it to accommodate the thickness of the pants you wear.
You'll use the knife far more often than the second gun.

Re: EDC knife... need suggestions
I find myself more and more needing a knife. I have a S&W M&P knife that is great. My son carries one on duty. To big for me, but I use around the house.
I have a very nice Kershaw that is perfect weight, but that clip is tough. I will try to carry it more and see if will adjust.
I have made vows three times never leave home without it, but after a week I stop carrying it.
Will not stop carrying two pistols though.

With a folder (one with a decent clip) you have several options, including front-pocket high-side; front pocket low-side (nearest the pant seam); rear-pocket nearest the seam; IWB clipped over the pants but under the belt, even SOB; boot carry; or even carried loose, in a pocket (may not want an assisted-opening knife for that). Cargo pants/shorts offer more options. When we get our four months of cooler weather in Texas, there are other coat/vest options for knives, too.
My go-to notion for a knife is that, if I really need it, it's because I can't get to or am protecting the gun on my strong-side. My knife is positioned so that's it's accessible by my off-hand, and I practice using it with that hand. Another reason I like reverse-edge techniques: a stronger stabbing position and less fine-motor control needed to be effective.

Don't want to stray off topic, but does anyone know of a place in the DFW area that one might receive some basic knife protection skills?

24 days in and I have not left without the knife. You were right the "clip" did adjust. It works great all the time. Praying to stay on the wagon.

I carry a Kershaw Blur or Tanto.

Re: EDC knife... need suggestions
These 2 knives I got yesterday are so crazy sharp, sharper than my utility knife razors and sharper than any razor I ever shaved with; they are staying closed unless I need them, sort of a finger off the trigger thing
In 15 minutes I got a 3/4" cut on an index finger-right hand, a 1/8" cut on left palm through a callus, and a 4" scratch on right thigh ... and I was being careful.
No friction needed to cut, I don't even recall the blade touching those parts of me except the index finger, I think the blade just has to see something and it has some supernatural powers
I'm not going to bother opening one to peel an orange or use in a utilitarian manner... They seriously are sharper than a brand new razor blade for shaving; downright crazy sharp, and I've owned and sharpened lots of knives over the years, I'm scared to open this again and probably won't unless needed.... reminds me of when I was just out of high school and used to "juggle" some machetes and switchblades I owned, and a room mate decided to sharpen them for me without warning me he was doing so ...as a friendly gesture... ouch
Funny how we get smarter with age and do fewer stupid things
