Not sure what they will do with those that have already submitted. I am sure they will be in contact with you advising what will be forthcoming.

I would give them a little time though. They are apparently slammed right now with new applications. All of you instructors should understand this as class requests and sizes have exponentially grown over the past couple of months.

I was just reminded today that your CHL Instructor Certification (or regular CHL for that matter) cannot be renewed more than 6 months ahead of expiration per statutes. The letter was sent out in error too early.

SO, hang on to your renewal notifications for now. You will be receiving additional correspondence from DPS when you are able to renew within the 6 month window.
Keith,
Where did you find the 6-month restriction in the statutes?

Just wondering...

Have any of you actually taken the online instructor exam?

I am not asking for "answers", but I would like to have some idea as to what to expect. Are they using the current "Student Exam" or have they updated it?

TIA

Sec. 411.185. RENEWAL.
(a) To renew a license, a license holder must:(1) complete a continuing education course in handgun proficiency under Section 411.188(c) within the six-month period preceding:(A) the date of application for renewal, for a first or second renewal; and(B) the date of application for renewal or the date of application for the preceding renewal, for a third or subsequent renewal, to ensure that the license holder is not required to complete the course more than once in any 10-year period; and
The date of aplicaiton for renewal is the expiration date of your ceertificate. I believe they are using this as the guideline for the Instructors certification as well, even though not clearly spelled out in the Instructors part of the government code.

Hang in there as I believe there may be some correspondence coming from DPS soon regarding this.

I think we differ on the interpretation that leads to the bold phrase. I interpret "(A) the date of application for renewal" as the date of the renewal application. Is this interpreted elsewhere to clarify it?

Not that I am aware of, but I do know DPS will not renew a CHL more than 6 months prior to expiration, so that is apparently how THEY are interpreting it.

Basically DPS sent out those instructor renewal letters several months too early. They don't yet know what all will be required for instructors this year & won't know for sure until summertime. One thing I do know for sure is that you will not need a CHL-90, regardless if your online checklist states that.

And how do you know that "for sure"?

They have to figure out if they're going to require NRA or other certs for renewals too, or if they want to risk the inevitable lawsuit for selective enforcement of their own rules.

I took it two years ago and it was NOT the same as the student test. I passed with a very good score. It wasn't that hard. At that time, I was told that I would have to take the written test AND shooting qualification this time around. It said I could find ANY CHL Instructor to qualify me and submit that on some form. It sounds like that might have changed.
