Maybe it started off that way.

In all seriousness, the last thing I would want in a large crowd is to have others trying to fire at a perp. The crossfire would surely end up causing more issues than helping. I would prefer to be able to take my shot as best possible while trying to get myself and my family/friends to safety.

Nothing silly about a "Universal Cry for help for nearby Chls" or maybe...

Perhaps a CHL badge complete with a whistle and a tune recognized by CHLers only...hey we're talking now or maybe not...

It's probably been said, but if I heard a cry for help and saw someone with a gun, there's NO way I'd want to get involved because you do not know what is happening. Even something so seemingly obvious as a gunman running down the street with a moneybag over his shoulder could be something as simple as a few college kids shooting a stupid video (heck, I worked as a surveyor when I was much younger and when we were bored beside a roadway, we'd start fake fights to see if anyone would stop).

There was an example in one of Massad Ayoob's books years ago that has stuck with me... I don't remember the exact words, but it was essentially asking what you'd do if you came across a man behind some trees in a park with a tied-up woman under him screaming for help. The instant response for most males would be to assist the woman, but in reality there are many people who are into *weird stuff* and the entire scene could have just as easily have been consensual. You just don't know nowadays.

So unless I'm in serious trouble (on my back getting pummeled) I don't want to try to call in a bystander, and on the same note I don't want to step into another person's altercation. People are sneaky, and in the heat of the moment it would be easy to end up helping the wrong person.

Sorry, but I'm not going to use the excuse of assuming that a woman tied up on the side of the road may be involved in something consensual in order to avoid my obligation as a human being to at least investigate wether or not she in fact needs assistance.
IMHO this whole thread is based on someone's complete misunderstanding of what an instructor was suggesting. There is little doubt in my mind that the instructor was telling his students that if they did in fact have to pull their weapon around other people that they should clearly state that they have a CHL not as a cry for assistance from other CHLs, but in order to avoid being shot by another CHL who might otherwise mistake them for the BG.

Seriously, even if we seriously created a rallying cry, how many bozos out there would yell it just to see what would happen. It would be self defeating immediately.

What you need:
1) Your smartphone with GPS.
2) Earphone or ear buds, better be with 24db noise cancellation.
3) A software to localize all CHLers in the vicinity mapped on Google map.
4) A multi-party phone call meeting software like Ooovoo or zoom relaying all CHLers.

Now CHlers are equipped to be first responders in Kenya-mall type incidents.
