I was working for Haney Drilling out of Bowie Texas on a thrible drilling rig as derrick man , we had finished the hole . The derrick was layed down and part of my job was to spool all the guy lines up to tie to the derrick to move it . I was inside the layed down derrick spooling and tying lines , a gin truck was backing in to get a winch line on to seperate the derrick sections . An old hand named Bill was Hairpins out of the big pins that connected the sections of derrick together . I hollered and told him a truck was backing in , he was an old hard head and payed me no mind . I heard a weird sound behind me and turned around , the rolling pin on the gin truck had mashed him against the derrick leg . Cought him chest high and there wasn't 4'' of him between the tailboard and derrick , totally crushed his chest . I ran over , reached over the derrick leg and got my arms under his holding him up . I was screaming like a woman at the truck driver to pull off , he finally heard me and pulled up , several roughnecks ran up and lowerd Bill to the ground but he was dead as soon as that gin truck mashed him . Felt sorry for the driver , he was a good guy , just a bad deal .

I saw one other die and many badly hurt , it was just the way it was , we all knew the risks .

I just reread my post , Dang ! I don't want to be a thread killer , this was a work related situation from 40 years ago . It's all good.............. post on !

Events like this are why my profession exists. I'm an Occupational Safety specialist...not always the most welcome guy on the jobsite, but a necessary evil. Although, I'm not an evil guy. I will usually jump in and lend a hand if asked, and I have on more than a few occasions. I was an industrial mechanic for 20 years before going into safety full-time. I haven't forgotten how to hold a wrench and I definitely remember where I came from...not like most of the kids coming out of college with degrees that are useless when it comes to actual work. If you don't know how the job is done, how could you possibly know if it's being done correctly and as safely as possible. My way of handling jobsite situations is "Compliant but Practical"...I understand that safety is the number one priority, but sometimes you have to do what is necessary to get the job done. I've seen and done most of the wrong things so I know how to get the job done without getting people hurt.

They have been on the market for a couple of years now. They have some kind of twisty thing that unlocks something and will only allow gasoline to flow when pushed into the opening.


There are no more separate breather openings and the only type I can find are the above. The twisty mechanism on mine doesn't always work properly and sometimes don't stop the flow when they are supposed to.

Those new gas cans have caused me to spill 10 times more gasoline than I ever did with the old ones.

They're even more annoying when trying to refuel small engines, like on chainsaws, weedeaters, and the like. There's really no way to NOT spill with those; you have to jam the nozzle in the tank and hold it there with one hand, hold the gas can with one hand, and use one hand to hold on to the appliance. Lacking three hands, you'll get gas everywhere.

An alternative option is to hold the nozzle open with one hand, hold the gas can with one hand, hold a funnel between nozzle and tank with one hand, and steady the appliance with one hand.

I dunno about whoever designed those things, but I'm not from the planet Marduk, so both of those methods are beyond me.

... I need to just get some good old-fashioned jerry-cans.

Twist the little twisty bit hard enough, and it will eventually vomit forth its spring and cease to function at all, leaving you with a less annoying push-to-flow nozzle. Fine on the 5 gallon can, but 1-2 gallon cans are hard to get positioned right to press it against the filler hole.

I second the use of the Super Siphon very easy to use and control. Only problem that I have encountered is they won't completely empty the can.

I've never figured out how to use the new style gas can nozzles, so I just remove the entire thing and carefully pour into a funnel.

I just watched the video of how to make these gas cans usable.

The guy who does the work is delightful, witty and makes doing the job look easy, with one exception. When he starts snipping the nozzle to make it work better the lighting is less than perfect. I'd really like to see what he's doing with better lighting.

Oh well...
