I always tell my students--there is no duty to retreat (given that you meet the criteria Charles outlined in his Mon Jul 27, 2015 9:50 pm post).

However, it is a good idea if you can safely retreat?

I would say yes for two reasons: 1) You may be able to avoid the hassle of the confrontation --and-- 2) If you try and cannot safely retreat, you build your foundation of "reasonableness" if your actions are later questioned.
