Looking good!

The carbine is quickly becoming my favorite ammo eater.

Scott B., et al.

Thanks for the info on your initial post. I have a question though. In post you wrote...
Converting the pistol to SBR (short barreled rifle) requires that a number of Czech parts be replaced with US parts. This is for 922r compliance....
...The carbine version does not have the 922r compliance issues that the pistol does. Do the paperwork, pay the tax, and chop that barrel*, but please wait until you can do that legally.
What are the 922r compliance issues for the pistol? Can you please tell me a little more about this difference in the two versions if going to SBR it? CZ will not share any information as far as SBR'ing anything is concerned.

I have a carbine on order and was about to order the pistol to SBR it,...but maybe I need to order another carbine and SBR that one instead...so I'm waiting until I learn a little more about the potential issues, extra costs, etc.

Thanks!

18 U.S.C. ยง 922(r)
It shall be unlawful for any person to assemble from imported parts any semiautomatic rifle or any shotgun which is identical to any rifle or shotgun prohibited from importation under section 925(d)(3) of this chapter as not being particularly suitable for or readily adaptable to sporting purposes...
  • ....
    (a) No person shall assemble a semiautomatic rifle or any shotgun using more than 10 of the imported parts listed...[from a list of 20 key components]
If you're going to SBR a CZ Scorpion pistol (i.e., 'assemble') you'll have to change enough parts that are US made to not run afoul of 922r. The carbine version is already assembled.

What's most cost effective? What's easiest? The pistols are cheaper, but you'll have to buy parts to add. The carbine costs more, but no 922r issues - however, you'll have to get the barrel cut and threaded to SBR.

Maybe this question has already been answered...... Does it use proprietary mags, or does it (like the Kel-Tech Sub-2000 and other makers' 9mm carbines) use Glock magazines?

Proprietary, can be had sub $20. You can buy US made mags direct from CZ, or followers, springs, and base plates to convert the Czech made mags.

Much cheaper than Sig MPX magazines.

A note on Scorpion mags. Make sure to get the most recent. The older ones (mid-2015 and older) used a different polymer recipe and the feed lips were prone to cracking.

Date code is easy to decipher. Back side of the mag, just below top, you'll see a small stamped circle. Inside the circle are the last 2 digits for year of manufacture, separated by an arrow (looks more like a bar), "1|3" is 2013. Surrounding the circle, like a clock, are numbers. The top of the arrow separating the year points at one of the numbers, that's your production month.

I'm keeping a close eye on two Czech made 2013 mags I've got. So far, so good, but I won't be surprised if they eventually crack. I've also got newer formulation 2016 mags that are from CZ USA.

CZ will replace the older mags when/if you have an issue.

Thanks again for the info Scott. I'll read all those details. I talked with a dealer and he found a parts kit to SBR the Pistol (I think):

https://www.midwayusa.com/product/78985 ... n-evo-3-s1

Was going to put in another trigger anyway, and a few other things, so maybe I'll end up putting the kit together with other US made parts...as long as it complies in the end. Will have to spend some money, but would be anyway with some mods, so I might go with the pistol rather than having to cut down the barrel.

Just shot the carbine (faux suppressor model) today for the first time. Love it!

By the time you get done with the US parts kit, all the other suggested mods, and the failed mags, I still think you could have simply bought a SIG. But maybe you just like tinkering and if that is indeed the case, then that has value also to my mind.

In any event, and just for the record, my SIG has had absolutley ZERO issues.

Sig MPX is a great product, but you could buy 2 Scorpions for the price of your MPX. Plus, you can buy 4 brand new scorpion mags for the price of one MPX mag.

I'll probably get an MPX someday, but I'm having too much fun w/ my Scorpion for now.

Coincidental to that is this month's issue of Gun-Tests magazine, which has a three-way comparison titled "9mm Pistols: Uzi Mini Pro, MPA Defender, and SIG Sauer MPX-P". The Mini Uzi sells for $999; the MPA Defender sells for $680; and the MPX sells for $1700........or more than the other two combined. The Uzi scored a "C", the MPA an "A-", and the MPX a "B". The cheapest gun scored best.

A friend of mine just bought one of those mini Uzis today for home defense. He's pretty jazzed about it.

It's clear in this case that you get what you pay for...

Reminds me of the perennial Porsche vs. Corvette comparison articles. The Porsche was always the test drivers' favorite, but the writer would inevitably note that it was $50K more in price. It always comes down to what you can afford. If only we had all just been born rich instead of handsome :biggrinjester:

I'm right in the middle of three days worth of Sig Sauer armorer's courses, so I'm a fan

One of the guys I shoot carbine matches is breaking in a Gen 2 MPX. Only problem he's had so far is mixing Gen 1 and Gen 2 mags, and that it won't run 147 gr ammo (frustrating doubles feeds). Eats 115 and 124 gr all day long.

I pretty much run 124 gr NATO exclusively, typically either WInchester or IMI. Not a single misfeed even when new. And I have yet to clean it... :cheers2:
