There is a joke that when asked if you are Jewish, a Gentile will answer "no" and a Jew will answer "why do you ask?"* I have to say that that is my first reaction when asked by someone I'm not very familiar with. Historical biases aside, to me it seems like an odd question from a stranger.



*Similar to the threads about doctors asking if you have guns. Someone who doesn't will answer "no", someone who does will answer "none of your business".

"talk to" = "talk at".... never 'talk with'

But those can both be very effective lines if you happen to find yourself sitting next to a talkative person on a long flight where you just want to get some sleep. That, or mention your job as an IRS auditor.
