This seems most likely to me. Every international flight I have ever been on (incoming), baggage claim was inside the secured area. We got our bags & cleared customs before leaving the secured area.

If he was coming from Canada, most likely he cleared US Customs in Canada. Last time I flew in from there, we did. Same was true returning from Ireland.

Watching ABC, they just reported that shooter had a legally checked gun in his baggage and went into bathroom and loaded it.

Thanks. It's not surprising that some things have changed since I quit flying probably 8-10 years ago.

Yep, I've done it in Calgary and Abu Dhabi. The latter surprised me, because of the distance from the US, but I was 'officially' cleared back into the US before I ever got on the plane!

Back on topic: Since this is south Florida, and the news media hates guns so much...what's the over/under on how long it takes some news agency to refer to him as a 'white hispanic'.

I'm watching the news feeds on this, and I see an interesting thing that many of us would need to consider:

Lots of passengers are walking around on the tarmac. Some are sitting there with their luggage.

If I'm in that group, there is NO WAY that I'm accepting my luggage on the tarmac. If I've flown in, then my checked firearm is in my checked baggage. If I have that checked baggage in my possession on that tarmac, inside the secure area, then I'm breaking the law.

Just a reminder that as law-abiding carriers, we need to maintain our situational awareness, and avoid the temptation to take possession of our items until we're in an area where we're allowed to do so.

I'm sure you would probably get a pass as you were ordered to that location by law enforcement. Evacuating people from a UNSECURED area to a SECURE area would make it an unsecured area.

PS are you kidding?? If I came in on the tail end of this situation, you would have to be a fool to reveal that you have a firearm locked inside your luggage. No one would "hear" you and if they did, the chance they would misunderstand you would be VERY HIGH! Just follow orders and try not to over complicate the issue.
