yep, the "call your local law enforcement to get proper training" advice is what seems to counter the advice that owning a gun is appropriate. It's the big city police chief opinion that homeowners should NOT have guns that seems to pervade. That is possibly a perception created by an oversealous anti gun media though. I just think the "run and hide crowd" has a much more willing accomplice in the media than the "defend yourself crowd". Most of these people really believe that it is the duty of their local police department to "protect" them from these type occurances.
This is really an unbelievable stance to take. Calling the police in Dallas might get them there in 30 minutes if it was a life and death situation (given that you even have that option). There's no way that the police can be there if you need them. At least not right WHEN you need them. That's a big city. In my suburb it doesn't take five minutes for them to get here on a Saturday night. So I don't understand how the big city mentality is this way. Even going so far as not allowing people to own guns, a useful sized defense knife or even pepper spray in some places like NYC or Chicago.

There's no way I could ever live in a place like that. I'm going to at least defend my home or try to if someone breaks in. I mean, look at the alternative...raped and burned alive. The way I see it, there is no choice. Anyone with a little bit of training can effectively wield a shotgun. I can't believe you have to wait two weeks to buy one up there. Handgun...three months??? I wonder how long it takes a criminal to purchase a gun on the street in Connecticut?

Anyone who uses a security system to protect their life is confused as to their purpose. Security systems, like other non-lethal force options, at best can deter an attacker but most likely will only buy you a few seconds of time.

Although I believe an alarm system, pepper spray, a powerful flashlight, etc... are great tools, you must also consider what to do when they don't have the intended effect. Unfortunately, many law enforcement agencies, local governments and the media make them seem to be "the solution". Not only is it bad advice but it is also dangerous.

Yeah, but there are some places that are VERY difficult to get a gun, like NYC. I don't think you can legally own pepper spray there. Your only option might be a security system. I agree with you though...relying on that to save your life is just scary. I put mine on at night when I'm sleeping. If anyone walked through the house it would sound immediately and wake me up so I could get one of my guns.

One of my friends recently moved to NJ and is now a felon for pulling out his gun on a would be attacker the day after they moved there. He has a CHL, but forgot he wasn't in Texas anymore. At least he's alive, but I don't know what's worse...dying... or living in New Jersey.

I was watching a game show on TV recently where the contestant (1st place) could win a week long trip to NJ....all expenses paid.

Second place was two weeks!

This case rattled me when it happened over three years ago. It rattles me still. The first of the murder trials is just now being conducted: http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/ap/ ... 27716.html.

If only this Connecticut family had been armed and had known how to defend themselves. If only Jennifer, Michaela, and Hayley Petit were alive today, and instead the two thugs who callously and brutally murdered them were serving their eternal torment.

Say a prayer for this family, kiss your wife or husband, and vow that this will never happen to your children.

One Convicted, One to Go

Steven Hayes, 47, was convicted of capital felony, murder, sexual assault and other counts by a jury that heard eight days of gruesome testimony about the July 2007 attacks on Jennifer Hawke-Petit and her daughters, 17-year-old Hayley and 11-year-old Michaela.

[Dr William] Petit [husband and father of the victims] urged the jurors "to use the same diligence and clarity of thought" as they consider the sentence.
Death sentence is possible. Should be a slam-dunk. We'll see.

A very horrific situation, the sad thing is that this could have been prevented had the justice system done their part to protect society from worthless thugs. There are numerous individuals in society that needs to be locked up, there are too many second and third chances for scum bags and guess what we the innocent law abiding citizens have to suffer for their poor decisions.
We the American citizens have to defend our families, loved ones, homes and property diligently. I depend on no one or nothing but my sense of awareness and my given right to bear arms sure alarms, security lights with motion detectors are preventative measures. Thugs with bad intentions are not easily persuaded to leave without you having the upper hand or the drop on them.
The thought of this situation sickens me, how can someone do something like this.
My wife is beside me as I write this, and I thank GOD for her daily, my family I thank GOD for them daily. I will do everything in my will power to protect my loved ones, and I hope and pray that I make the right decisions.
Things such as this horrible situation had overwhelming influence on me to get my CHL. I have been an armed citizen all my adult life nothing different now just legal to carry on my person. There will be no hesitation on my part to stop the threat towards my family or myself should I ever be faced with a bad situation that gets out of hand.
May the Lord Bless William Petit and family.

We had to live there for exactly 3 years before we moved to Texas. It is as bad as everyone says that it is. We were only about 30 miles northwest of Newark. My wife couldn't wait for me to get the first transfer out of there.

The goons and the thugs run about everything in every part of the State. I'm not surprised that they've convinced the very corrupt politicians to pass laws to keep the honest citizens from having the ability to respond. Only Chicago is higher on the scale of political corruption.

The Petit case was profiled in depth October 8 on NBC's Dateline. The full video isn't posted yet, but this is the link to the current Dateline article: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/39542939/ns ... ns/us_news.

The verdict phase for Hayes begins October 18.

Connecticut is a liberal state when it comes to the death penalty, having executed only one person, a serial killer, since 1960. Kudos to the DA who rejected all plea-bargins in this case, all deals that would have meant removing a death sentence from the table.

Let's hope the jury does the right thing.

The jury ended up deliberating four days in order to arrive at a unanimous decision about Hayes's sentence, but the jury's recommendation--and rightly so--was a death sentence, given to the judge today.

The trial of the other murderer, Joshua Komisarjevsky, will begin early next year.

Every time I read this it gives me the chills, the death sentence is about as close to justice as this case will get. Hopefully the other animal responsible for this will receive the same sentence. Thank you for posting the update.

Was it Roy Bean who expressed regret that a particular condemned man could only hang once?

Finally, Joshua Komisarjevsky has been found guilty.
A Connecticut jury today found Joshua Komisarjevsky guilty of taking part in the murders of Dr. William Petit's wife and two daughters in a brutal home invasion that ended with his daughters tied to their gasoline splashed beds and the house on fire.

Komisarjevsky, 31, was found guilty on all 17 counts against him, charges that included murder, burglary, kidnapping, sexual assault and arson. Six of those charges are considered capital offenses, making Komisarjevsky eligible for the death penalty
http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference ... index.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

On Dec. 9, a jury sentenced Mr. Komisarjevsky to death.

Thank Our Blessed God.

Since his conviction in October, Mr. Komisarjevsky’s lawyers have waged an aggressive fight to avoid a capital sentence. But the jury in New Haven unanimously voted for capital punishment on each of the six capital counts he faced.

God Bless the Petit family.
