I wouldnt have a problem shooting a dog DEAD just like anything else that would be trying to cause me bodily harm or injury. Better them than me.

As I have said in other posts a $15 sjambok which is legal in Texas to carry will stop any dog or snake. If you shoot an attacking dog make sure the dog you shoot is trying to kill your dog as then it is legal to shoot it. Strange the way Texas law is that if it attacks you it is not definitively legal to kill but if it attacks your dog it is.

What criminal law will you be charged with if you shoot a dog that is attacking you? Discharging a firearm in city limits? Animal cruelty? Hunting out of season...

Poaching? Destroying a person's property?
The necessity defense would be quite easily available for any of these? It's nice that the health and safety code says you can kill a coyote...if it's attacking your livestock, but what law says you can't kill any animal that is attacking you? And why wouldn't 9.22 (necessity) apply?
A dog is property, not a person. Though there is no reason to wantonly kill them, there's a much lower standard for necessity, than for crimes against a
PERSON.

I was attacked by a large dog not long ago, he was part of a pack of 4. I wasn't armed as I was coming from work as a contractor (another law that needs to change). I had to fight him off with my cap.
My neighbor has two young daughters. He didn't use a cap.
A lot of people are irresponsible with their "pets". They get them and forget them. I don't get mad at a dog for being a dog, but I'm not going to let one get me down and hurt me. Or my neighbor's little girls.

I grew up in the country and was raised to think simply. I learned that it was perfectly legal to shoot a dog in the head. IF the dog didn't die or was purposely shot, not to kill, but to harm than that is abuse and you can get in trouble. Same applies everywhere else, ie livestock etc.
Hit a dog on the road, cops wont chase your down, they won't even write you a ticket, unless they know you voted for Killary. If you shot someone elses dog (kill) without a PROVEN reason, be prepared at max to pay or replace the property.
I know it sounds mean, and i dont intend to offend anyone here. Like I said, i way raised with simple thinking, sorry.

I am in agreement with protecting my safety from any animal that puts me in a no get-a-way situation. Criminal issues do not scare me. The civil suit by the animal owner does.
