Welcome to the Vinyl Music Lovers Society SQLGeek! Digital folks will tell you that the warmth, depth and "soul" that you're hearing is an artifact poor quality sound reproduction. Don't let 'em fool ya....

I believe that the digital signal processing also limits the sound to 20,000kHz. Even though most people can't hear higher, the processing eliminates some of the harmonics that contribute the fullness [warmth?] of the sound. The loss of some of the lower frequencies is also noticeable. Also saving files to MP3 reduces sound quality. The thing I like most about digital is the absence clicks, pops, and skips.

I agree with all of your points WildBill.
A clean, unscratched, dust free vinyl disc eliminates the majority of "clicks, pops, and skips". Next step is a quality turntable, with a dense non-resonant plinth, quality pivot, a straight- light weight- balancing tone arm w/queing, high quality cartridge/stylus, and a belt drive for the platter that removes mechanical movement and vibration from the record. A discrete circuit pre-amp, amp, and phono stage, loudspeakers(I'm partial to Klipsch for all around listening)and a sub-woofer complete a basic system that will dispense with the unwanted noise.
Vinyl is an investment in time as well as money(high quality equip't isn't inexpensive). Maintaining your records and your equip't takes time, the results however, are worth the effort. I still wince every time I recall the old RCA fold down phonograph with built-in changer that my parents used. Load up 8 LPs and let 'em drop from four inches on to another LP spinning at 33 1/3 rpm, it's no wonder they were unplayable after a few years.
My 1973 copy of "Dark Side of the Moon" as an example, is pretty close to pristine and played on my system, has created expressions of awe from young listeners(my kid's friends)as they hear studio recorded music faithfully reproduced for perhaps the first time in their lives.

Back in 68-71 we had a rock band in town that was pretty good....played big dances attended by all the kids in the area every other Saturday night. The drummer was a buddy of mine and did vocals on some of the songs also.
