got this reply today:
" We do not have a time frame for when your application will be complete.
Please keep in mind that this wait time is not isolated to you, it is
experienced by everyone. Your application is processing nornally."
I am day 89 today.
I asked for more detailed information about the time frame.
I will be contacting my state rep on this today.

First time post here.
My dates:
30-Mar-08 Took class
2-Apr-08 Mailed packet
11-Apr-08 Check cleared bank
12-May-08 Nothing. No response. No PIN. After 40 days I thought I would have at least a PIN by now.
16-Jun-08 Still nothing, not even a PIN. 75 days and nothing.
11-Jul-08 Got PIN. 100 days even. I think I'm not even going to bother to check on-line, I'd find it too frustrating.
25-Aug-08 Got Plastic in mail today. 145 days. Amazing.

It sounds like since mid-June or July they are processing them in a separate queue.
Anyway, after getting a generic form-letter reply or two, I finally began to email them with specific questions. Eventually a Supervisor started to email back and actually worked to expedite it.
On Thursday 9/4 the CHL was issued and they attempted to overnight it to me via UPS but must have missed the pick-up window. The CHL was shipped UPS next (week) day air on Friday 9/5 and should arrive by Monday the 8th.
That's 100 days by my count. Took forever! But just in time to keep me legal for a long driving vacation.

As of today, I'm on day 110 of this long ridiculous wait. DPS received my application May 21, however according to two phone calls to them, my information wasn't even entered into their system until July 27. I've been very patient, only calling them twice....both times only to inquire about my status, never to complain. Also both times I thanked them for taking the time to update me and let them know I appreciated their hard work, knowing the increase in applications was the real cause of all delays. I emailed them this past week and have yet to get a response. Again in my email I was very polite and understanding....only wanting to get an update on my current status. Haven't heard squat back from them yet.
My patience and politeness are done. My total wait may get bumped up to 220 days but I'm calling them Monday with a new attitude and ready to rip'em a new one. This is a joke.....I've been a project manager in several different industries over the past 10 or so years, and if I fell this far behind in projects that I've managed I would've been fired a long time ago. The "increase in applications" excuse should only hold validity for a month or so, not the 5 or 6 plus months that I've seen happening. My situation is this....I've lived in Texas all my life, never been arrested, no child support, only lived in two counties (Fort Bend and Brazoria), stable work history, and even held security clearances twice...once for working for a government securities trading institution and another time for working for a governemt contractor. Both of these clearances required full background checks and would not have been approved had I had any felony convictions.
At this point I'm thinking I've been too nice and need to become the squeaky wheel instead.
