Using that method, there is a potential to damage or break the extractor, giving you a one-shooter when it counts. I don't know how risky it is for Glocks, specifically. There may not be a much risk, but I don't think I'd do it.

Whenever I try that, the slide won't fully close on my G19

You could probably check the gun out every 3 or 4 months and clean it that should keep you pretty well at ease with the condition/readiness of your handgun.
