A different point of view, I hope:

Restating a previous answer is a good thing. When I'm teaching a class, I try to not answer a question by saying "look it up in the book" (unless I'm really trying to get them to actually read the book!), even though I've had far too many instructors say that same thing to me over the years. Instead, I'll try to state the answer in a way that's different than I've said it before.
My subjects are usually difficult (and I consider CHL in that category), so it takes several times restating/repeating an idea for it to finally take hold. Of course, in a classroom, you have the benefit of all three methods of learning; here, it's visual only, so it's even harder to get the point across (one of the reasons I really don't like "virtual classes", although I can teach them).

Restating a previous answer helps me a lot. My first post in this forum was really needed because I was getting confused by so much information here on a particular question. If I had received an answer of "Do a search" (which seems to be the standard answer on most forums, no matter the subject), I would have remained confused. Instead, I received several great replies to my question, all of which helped clarify the answer I needed, and that made a huge difference in getting my application through quickly (oh, yeah, DynaBlue's too).

I agree with those who feel this forum is good-natured. I have felt chastised once or twice in replies, but realized it was in the spirit of conversation. I have also joined other gun forums, but find I don't read those very often, compared to this one.

Thanks for this forum, and thanks for your patience in helping us newbies! :tiphat:

....Teach a man to fish.. If they learn how to look it up for themselves and actually do it, most remember it better. I will usually show them the words to look up in the index or TOC so they can always find it.

Unfortunately most forums do not have a strong algorithmic search and unless you know the correct words you can "fish" a long time to find what you are looking for. A neat trick to is to use Google to search a specific domain. Assuming I am searching for HK45 on this site I would type: "hk45 site:texaschlforum.com" (minus the quotes) in the search line and you are now using the power of Google to search this forum. You can also do the same thing with boxes using the Advanced Search option too.

I am okay if someone points out the topic in another thread, but get a bit frustrated when I have already read it and what I am trying to find out isn't answered. Most cases though I would have asked on the thread I found with it already. It is about like tech support: I never call them unless I've tried everything I know to fix the problem. Typically I end up having to get past tier one to someone that actually knows how it works rather than someone reading from a script to solve the simple stuff. I have found a wealth of information on this site and a couple of others. This one, by far has had the most friendly and helpful people so far. :tiphat:

Now obviously all this doesn't apply here, but having dealt with "interest" communities all the way from the days of BBSs, FidoNet, and Usenet to today's social networks and forums; from subjects as diverse as computer users, internet gaming, and book author fandom to marine aquarium husbandry- I've often seen something like the above.

The best way to slow the cycle (it's almost impossible to break) is to be aware that it's happening.
Not to hijack the thread, but you brought back some memories there...BBS's, config.sys, autoexec.bat, FidoNe!...

This cycle even predates public access to Usenet...we used to see it in some of the early "one-off" nets (I'm thinking of GBBS, but I'm afraid that dates me a bit).

Ahhh a trip back to the '80's - USRobotics vs. Hayes wars. 1200bps / 2400bs / 9600pbs / 14,400bps evolution. $700/month phone bills, ASCII codes. I loved running BBS's.

Me too!! I came in to the fray a bit later and sysop'd Dagger's Den in lovely Hanford California from 1993 to 1995. I learned an awful lot about computers then!

Sorry for the sidebar...just want to join the trip down Memory Lane for a bit.

Agreed, especially when skills are being built. Unfortunately, I find that I often have to explain the text in the textbook as well.... :mad5

In this case, I was thinking of building comprehension, which (in my subjects) typically requires looking at the subject from different angles. I'm still surprised at how often just changing one word in an explanation will suddenly make everything clear, just because of the student's POV (especially when I thought it was so very clear when I said it the first time :smilelol5: ).

I'm also not a visual learner, so studying textbooks (especially those written more recently) is often painful.... ;-)

So, restatement and recapitulation work for me!
