As a former NJ resident and with friends living there, I occasionally look at the crime rates. Keeping in mind that it is a "gun free State" from a protective handgun standpoint, on of the statistics was that 60% of violent crimes were committed with guns. There is no absence of pistols, only they are all in the hands of the BGs.

Statistically, I believe that Houston is worse than Newark (a smaller city) but not by much and both of them are about double the National rate for violent crimes.

I'm very certain that if I used a gun to protect myself and my family there, I would be looking at a harsher sentence than any BG on the docket. The NJ courts are much more like the UK than like TX in general.

Back in the late 80's I made the mistake of taking a job in NJ and lived there for about 18 months.

A friend came to visit me from NC. He was a grad student, sharing a house with other grad students, and decided to bring his shotgun with him on the road, rather than leave it at home where one of his roommates was anti.

As he's taking his luggage out of the car and bringing his stuff into my house, a police car rolls by. Probably the only police car I saw in my neighborhood in the 18 months I lived there. The officer sees a young man emptying a car with NC plates and bringing stuff INTO my house, stops him, checks the car (by looking in the already-open trunk) and sees the shotgun (unloaded, no shells anywhere to be found).

You would think it was a terrorist attack.

Within 10 minutes we had 3 squad cars and 5 officers at my house. Questions upon questions. I was asked for MY ID too. How long have you lived here (about a year)? Why do you still have a NC license (because I'm not planning on staying [they loved that one])?

30 minutes later, my friend gets his shotgun back and we get the all clear to proceed with our lives. As the cops are rolling away, my friend said "Do you think I should have told them about the handgun (Taurus 9mm) in the glove box?"



Thankfully I found a new job a moved back to NC a few months later.
