The cop did not say I am felon, I am drug adict, etc.. Most likely those investigators are private contactors not paid by city of NY. Stll this is none of Bloomberg business. I guess ATF was and is at most Gun shows. At Allen, TX gun show ATF had a booth and had active patrol of the gun show

Just to clarify, do you mean it doesn't appear the sellers committed a crime?

Because it seems pretty clear the New Yorkers committed crimes by purchasing handguns in Arizona, and Bloomberg appears to have been involved in a conspiracy to violate Federal gun laws. If they used fake AZ ID, it appears they violated ARS 28-3476 as well.
Correct; it's not at all clear that the sellers committed a crime. It's absolutely clear the NYC COPS and anyone conspiring with them did commit a federal crime.

I know a lot of people here are saying NYC cops broke federal laws, but the investigators weren't NYC cops, just PI's hired by the city.
Bloomberg's office said all the investigators were Arizona residents and broke no laws.
Now I don't agree with what Bloomberg's doing, and I agree with posters above that no laws were even broken on the sellers part, but I did want to get that part cleared up. Of course that's only if Bloomberg's office isn't lying.

Actually Bloomberg's efforts could have interfered with federal investigations which could result in charges being filed, but that's probably not going to happen.

The story is deceptive and keeps going on http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/01/ ... geNumber=1" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Why say dealers (FFL?) sell hundreds of handguns and bring up 2 private sales with questionable buyer?

I actually got to wondering about the identity of the buyers since I could never confirm that they were NYC COPS as they were in 2007. However, initial reports referenced the use of fake identification, but initial reports are usually lacking in accuracy. If fake identification was used, then a crime was committed, but not a violation of the Gun Control Act of 1968.

As a final note, just because Bloomberg's office said they were Arizona residents doesn't give me a lot of comfort as to the statement's accuracy.

Yes, I think that I know precisely what you mean, Oldgringo. But I cannot bring myself to say it.

Or not....

I've nothing against FFLs, but it would be an even wiser thing to simply not sell a gun privately to someone whom you either don't know, or who makes your spidey sense tingle. I don't want to pay a a fee for transferring a gun that I own, and I'm not inclined to transfer it through an FFL even if the other guy will pay for it because I very deliberately do not want there to be a paper trail in the gummint's hands. What happens to them after I buy them is none of the gummint's dadgum business.

I believe that it isn't the gummint's dadgum business when I originally buy the gun from a dealer, either. If I had my way, there would be no 4473, and there would be no NICS or any other kind of background check. I don't want them involved in my personal affairs at all. If I involve an FFL in a private transaction, then I have just involved the gummint — with all due respect to any members who are FFLs.
This might be better for a new thread, but will start it here to see what y'all think:

Why is it that with guns (or anything else), we as law-abiding citizens must PROVE our worthiness? Why not make the "bad guys" prove THEIR worthiness, or more to the point put the scarlett letter on all the bad guys so they can't buy a gun, be near children, or whatever right the punishment for their particular crime takes away from them.

Simple: You walk into the gun store, you don't have a big scarlett C branded on your forehead, then you can buy as much of whatever guns/ammo you want. If you walk in with a scarlett C on your forehead, then you can't.

And why do we have to check a sex offender database? Why don't the sex offenders have a bit read P branded on their forehead so we know not to let our children near them - in addition to an ankle bracelet/gps that alerts us all via our "smart phones" when an undesirable is nearby.

I get tired some times of having to "prove" I'm a good guy, I guess.

Note, I realize this is sorta fantastical talke above - just one of those things that always backrearwards to me.

You guys can gripe all you want. I'm taking action. I'm asking my Congressman and my Senators to open an investigation into the illegality of what Bloomberg is doing. I want that pompous blowhard on the hot seat. It's time to stop complaining about these jerks and start doing something about them.

Here's a copy of what I sent:
Recently the New York Times reported on an "undercover sting" that Mayor Bloomberg orchestrated at an Arizona gun show - http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/31/us/31 ... odayspaper" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It appears, from the reporting of the story, that Mayor Bloomberg and his investigators have violated federal gun laws.

I would like you to open an investigation into this incident to determine if Bloomberg has in fact broken the law. Note that he has done this previously and been warned, in writing, by the DOJ that what he is doing is illegal. A copy of the letter may be found here - download/file.php?id=2186" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I am outraged that a public official would blatantly violate federal law and nothing would be done about it.

Good idea! I've sent e-letters of protest to both Senators Hutchison and Cornyn. We'll see what we see.
